  • Yeah, it's an uncomfortable thing to admit, but we don't actually know if it's true that "real" intelligence works fundamentally differently than modern ML techniques. The argument that generative AI isn't "real" creativity could still turn out to be cope.

  • That would be an actual act of rebellion and kick off an incredibly destructive war.

Let's be very fucking clear about this: Pritzker deploying the Illinois national guard would be an entirely justified and very legal act of defense. Trump attacking the state using the Texas guard is the act of war.

  • To answer your question: the A310 and N100 appear to be pretty evenly matched when it comes to max number of streams. ... Since any iGPU would have acces to normal system RAM, which is probably a lot more than 4GB, these iGPU’s might even be capable of running more parallel streams.

Thanks, that indeed answers my question!

One thing you might want to consider: the A310 has significantly more compute power than the iGPU’s in these processors. This matters if you ever decide to run a local ML model. ... You could also run local LLM’s, text2speech, speech2text, or similar models, should you care about that.

If were to decide I need compute, I could just put my AMD GPU back in. Even at 8 years old, my Vega 56 should still be way better than an A310 for that.

Or if I were going to get an Intel discrete GPU and had compute as a use case, I'd be talking about the B580 instead of the A310. Edit: I just found out the Arc Pro B50 is a thing. I'd definitely be going for that instead of a B580.

(Or if I got really desperate, I'm pretty sure there'd be a way to let a parallel-compute-hungry service running on my Proxmox server remotely access the RX 9070 XT on my gaming PC, with enough fiddling around.)

If I may add a 3rd option though: consider upgrading to a 5600G or something similar. ... the 5600G doesn’t support AV1, which could be a dealbreaker I guess.

According to this, "AMD also chose to reuse the 7nm Vega graphics engine instead of incorporating newer RDNA variants," which means it isn't any better for the purpose of transcoding than the discrete Vega I already have (except for using less power). Also, and more to the point, the Jellyfin Hardware Selection guide straight-up says "AMD is NOT recommended." Any AMD, whether integrated or discrete and no matter how new. And then it says it again in bold text! That's why I'd pretty much ruled out that option before I posted my question.

(In contrast, the same page says "if you do not need CUDA for other applications, it is highly recommended that you stick with Intel Graphics on Linux" and specifically recommends the Intel N100/12th-gen N-series in a couple of places.)

I appreciate the thinking outside the box, though!

  • See my other reply expanding on why Raspberry Pi specifically.

Otherwise, while your strategy worked when I was a kid -- back in the DOS/early Windows days we had to actually figure out how stuff really worked out of necessity, and often without help from the Internet because we weren't online yet -- those days are gone. The expectations of easiness are too high now, and kids would just get frustrated and bitch about wanting to go back to a "just works" tablet or phone instead. They really need some additional killer feature to be excited about, that they can't get with a generic device running a web browser, in order to be motivated to explore.

My kids have Raspberry Pi 400s but are too young to get into reading the guide book that came with them yet, so even under (what I consider to be) those ideal circumstances they mostly ignore all the local software and just try to play the web-based games they found out about from school. 😕

In other words, even a Raspberry Pi isn't a guarantee of fostering real computer literacy, but I still think it gives the best chance (better than a generic old PC, and way better than a consumption-oriented tablet/phone).

  • That's a neat idea!

You'd have to be real careful doing it in neighborhoods near me, though -- not because the folks around here aren't progressive enough, but because brick pavements are "historic" and they'd get mad if you painted them any color. You'd have to go find one of the spots where they needed new paving and put in stamped concrete fake brick instead.

  • That's really neat.

I do wish somebody would edit this part...

Leia's own mission, as she says in that holographic message, is to pick up Obi-Wan and take him to Alderaan. Or so she thinks. Actually, her father just wants her to meet Kenobi, which up to this point she never has.

...to clarify that "father" is talking about Bail Organa, not Darth Vader, though. It doesn't become clear until a few paragraphs later.

Also, it unfortunately was written too early to account for Ahsoka etc.

  • 50m worth of aisle is a pretty frickin' huge wedding venue. I guess 5 dads implies a lot of extended family, but still, just how many guests are you suggesting?!

Those 5 dads had better be splitting the catering bill...

  • Mini PCs / old Optiplexes don't have built-in GPIO and a huge database of kid-friendly projects to do with them.

It's that software and community and hacker ethos built into the design that makes the difference, not the performance specs of the hardware. The point is "facilitating kids learning about computing," not merely "being a desktop computer."

I mean, I guess you could install Raspberry Pi OS on a PC and add a GPIO breakout board (like this or this) to try to replicate the pedagogical experience of a Raspberry Pi without the "overpriced" hardware, but it's not going to be nearly as straightforward as just using a real Pi.

  • Not allowing ISPs to pick and choose winners among web services is absolutely what Net Neutrality is about. Bundling or discounting subscriptions isn't technically the same thing as zero-rating, but the end result of making a particular ISP-preferred service cheaper than alternatives is the same.
