Wouldn’t you say the second season was a take on bringing real world problems into Star Trek context? The dystopia reality is an authoritarian regime founded on racism, and the planet is dying from ignored climate change, only barely being held together by essentially giant force fields in the sky.
If anything I found it a bit too on the nose for Trek, though that impression might be colored by this being the first real life issue of my time that is a topic in Trek. When old Trek shows aired the first time I was just a little kid and missed most of those; so I can’t relate as much.
In my opinion they do not. When considering the meta userbase we really should spend more time thinking about the quality of those potential new additions than the sheer quantity. Right now, many things that make typical social media so annoying and uninteresting to me are not notably present on the fediverse.
No overt narcissism, less tiktok content, less utterly mediocre people talking into their camera about the most average and uninteresting things imaginable. In comparison the culture here is friendly and nerdy. I don’t think it will be improved by a massive influx of shallow, vapid crap.
My biggest gripe is that the all feed is not actually the all feed from across the fediverse, but a feed from all instances your instance is federated with. I understand why that is the case, but the fediverse really lacks a way to explore beyond your walled garden and its natural bias. Essentially this acts a mandatory content filter that I have not set up or opted in to, which I personally object to. I have the tools to show and hide what content I want to see, I don’t need it pre selected for me. Or at least give the the additional option to see a feed of all instances and communities across Lemmy / the fediverse I have not personally blocked or filtered out.
As a bald and bearded dude I hate that this guy ruined the aesthetic. At least I have lighter hair color so it’s not completely terrible. Is this what men felt when Hitler took the stache and made it his brand icon?
Just for clarification, why is him pocketing the American public funds supposed to go to nasa an accomplishment? he took something that every American shared in, even the whole world shared in during the space race, and made it his private plaything he can exploit for profit in the future m.

Interesting background knowledge that they were supposed to be gay, puts a lot of things into new perspective.
That being said, I don’t really like the idea, I enjoyed them as these unlikely but good platonic friends.
I don’t think adding a romantic aspect to them would have improved their characters. For example Garak has many traits that could be interpreted as stereotypically gay, especially within the time period the show was produced. Him being a flamboyant and well spoken heterosexual works better to subvert cliches.
Come to think of it, Bashir also isn’t the manliest of men. Which i also find more interesting for a heterosexual character.

Das wird mit Sicherheit die Absicht dahinter sein. Genau wie beim Stütze beziehen, der Staat weiß doch bereits dass derjenige arbeitslos ist, und wenn derjenige das Geld nicht mehr braucht weil er nun Einkommen hat, wird er sich schon melden um nicht massive Bußgelder wegen erschleichen von Leistungen und / oder Steuerbetrug abzubekommen.
Stattdessen muss man als Betroffener alle paar Monate den Antrag erneuern, die Bedürftigkeit nachweisen, und durch all die Reifen springen die man so vorgesetzt bekommt, ganz zu schweigen von der Idee diese ganze Bürokratie durch ein BGE zu ersetzen und die Beamten stattdessen steuern fahnden zu lassen. Alles mit dem Hintergedanken dass dann weniger Leute die Sozialleistungen in Anspruch nehmen.
Leider einer der Gründe warum ich die Community geblockt habe. Ist ja nicht nur ein beliebtes meme sondern ein gezwungenes meme, was das Ganze aus dem "möglicherweise lustig" Bereich in den "autoritär verordnete Lach-Stunde" Bereich bewegt.

How can the user possibly trust an AI that is for all intents and purposes a secretive stranger with an agenda and values you don’t know? Especially because capitalism will only develop a slave to their profits, they would never create an actual intelligence with free will the user could actually get to "know" and trust, it would never constitute a person in the philosophical sense.
The whole thing is creepy and dystopian come to think about it… we allow the worst of humanity to shape and bind what will essentially be a superhuman entity to their will.
Of course he should be held accountable, but I still don’t see how any of this is business of the public.
This is very tame and average relationship drama, most people act immature or selfish or otherwise not in the most text book kind of way when emotions are involved.

Nothing in there sounds problematic to me. Dude expressed his boundaries (as in, non negotiable dealbreakers) and that’s okay. Of course it is gonna sound like an ultimatum if it is an ultimatum, why is that not okay? Why can a person not say "stop doing this or we can’t be together any more"? If it were something else than posting bikini pictures, for example an onlyfans account, is that enough to be a dealbreaker?
I wouldn’t want such a person as a partner myself either, regardless of how insignificant or petty the boundary is it should be respected and if that isn’t possible, move on.
Personally I recently did the same because lemmy.world didn’t commit to defederating meta and I didn’t want to stay there, but I am not very happy on .ml either, I get an insane amount of tankie crap on the all feed now and apparently no more nsfw posts.
I’m an anti capitalist myself but I strongly oppose the idea that someone preselects what communities are visible to me, on .world it felt much more organic and well rounded.
Ultimately I will just have to make my own instance i suppose.
As a former "text book" leftist I am inclined to agree that good will alone is not enough for humanity in its current state to operate a society on, and that many current day leftists are wearing the same rose tinted goggles for the USSR and China that the right wears for the 50s.
We need both incentives as well as strict limits to remain within healthy behavior at large, otherwise we end up with apathetic full time unemployed people on the lower end as well as cancerous outgrowths like individuals possessing billions, living like feudal lords of medieval times.
Incentives tied to employment in the current form are not practical any more though. With continuing industrialization, automation, and the emergence of artificial intelligence on the horizon the economies of the world simply don’t need those people as workers any more. This leads to the UBI as the next logical conclusion to provide the consumer base our economies depend on with disposable income to participate as well as a means of securing their essential needs.
This then means the incentive must be different, personal ideas are to tie the UBI to the individual being at least x hours per month engaged in some kind of productive and/or creative outlet, be it education, community work, pursuing interests, or some other form of value provided to society based on the individual‘s interests and abilities.
Basically the Star Trek federation philosophy of personal improvement (enhanced with some basic incentive to participate), mixed with the communist idea of assigning professions based on ability, except with the individual freedom to choose instead.
Do something worthwhile, and if it’s just pursuing a hobby, and thats good enough.
Is this a challenge for privileged "middle class" people? Anyone who is actually struggling for money lives like this all the time.
