Since Japan is widely expected to enter into such a conflict, there's strong speculation that any attack on Taiwan would be preceded by a first strike against Japan and US forces there.
We were talking about Europe so I apparently wasn't specific enough. Most countries in NATO let any capacity they had for large scale land wars wither after the cold war ended since they only saw conflict in small "police actions" in far away lands as being in their future. Things like Kosovo. And, to be fair, even the Russians (Putin aside) were confident that Europe was past large land wars too.
Obviously no good can come of this domestically, but since all the Generals will be there instead of doing their jobs, it would also be a window of opportunity for China to invade Taiwan.
In every company I've worked for that had middle managers, they spent 80% of their time trying to justify their position with self-assigned busy work to try to look useful for the company.
Following Orders is deeply engrained in the military and obedience to authority is a hallmark of right-winger thought (they make up the bulk of the miliary). Unless it's extremely heinous like "fire on this old folks home" most soldiers will probably go along with murder.
You see all the civil war chuds online harping about liberals/the left and assuming a modern civil war would be an US vs THEM cake walk but the reality would be more like Bagdad when things were really bad with many different groups, often fighting each other and lots of bystanders getting killed. All these Right Wingers who want it so bad now with think their lives sucks and they'll all lose family members to the violence.
Technically the Freikorps would be more akin to groups like the Proudboys or Oathkeeprs. The analogy for ICE/Homeland Security agents/Federalized National Guard would be Gestapo.
Specifically in authoritarian or totalitarian regimes since Senior officers both have a lot to lose financially if the regime falls and typically are as guilty as the people they serve.
Any reason he could give is fabricated. Also, Portland in particular is more than just the usual "collapsing the Republic into a fascist dictatorship" thing he has going on. He's still butthurt about Portland from 2020.
