Since Japan is widely expected to enter into such a conflict, there's strong speculation that any attack on Taiwan would be preceded by a first strike against Japan and US forces there.

It always matters, especially with the increasing importance of Electromagnetic warfare capabilities.

We were talking about Europe so I apparently wasn't specific enough. Most countries in NATO let any capacity they had for large scale land wars wither after the cold war ended since they only saw conflict in small "police actions" in far away lands as being in their future. Things like Kosovo. And, to be fair, even the Russians (Putin aside) were confident that Europe was past large land wars too.

Technically the Freikorps would be more akin to groups like the Proudboys or Oathkeeprs. The analogy for ICE/Homeland Security agents/Federalized National Guard would be Gestapo.
