  • Yeah, my hope is that reddit is about to enter the "find out" phase. If they only stick to a 2 day blackout however (or snub it like the /r/sysadmin mods), things are going to get right back to status quo real quick unfortunately.

  • What do we think? Is IDG full of it? Is the industry trending toward DevOps? I suppose there's always the other options - hyper-specialize in a given technology, or move on to management. Or go start a goat farm or something.

  • I know this isn't heavy on the AI tech talk, but figured it was relevant. Applications of AI will definitely shape how the public accepts it.

Looks like a swing and a miss for Cyan on this application. I've started playing the game and figured that the lore would unfold well in drips throughout, but it sounds like it's kind of hodge-podged. I know I've had enough fun with the puzzles so far to keep going though.

  • Uhh... is that normal? I always thought Debian was known for its stability and long release cycle.

  • I see it as a massively inflated sense of self worth on the mods' part. Yes, /r/sysadmin has been handy for keeping up to date with events in the IT world. Is it the only source of breaking news? Hell no.

  • Absolute shit take on their part, and a 2-day blackout is the least that they could do. Everyone's systems won't go down in flames because /r/sysadmin isn't there for people to whine about how they hate their jobs for a few days. If there's some major vulnerability being exploited on those days, mainstream news and other tech news sites will pick it up.

However, they're not entirely wrong on the first point. I remembered the 2015 blackout to protest the firing of Victoria the AMA admin and other stuff about Ellen Chao (honestly don't remember or care what it was all about), and it was huge. Most subreddits went dark. Reddit didn't hire Victoria back. If I recall there was a PR statement, and everyone moved on with their lives.

When I was searching for that I found that reddit has had a handful of other blackouts since - one about the SOPA bill (which I seem to recall), another about COVID (which I don't), etc. - and as far as I can tell the most that all of those blackouts ever did was generate press.

They're already at that point - reddit's tenuous situation with their devaluation and the API nonsense has been all over the news, from Ars Technica, to CNN and Reuters. And really I don't think it's going to change anything either. Reddit's going public, the stakeholders will have their say, and the site is going to be monitized and crapified, the users be damned.

But again, going dark for 2 days is, IMO, ethically required. For that matter, they should stay dark until reddit changes course.

Oh well, now we have Lemmy. :)

  • Squeenix - if you don't hire this team and produce this game you're fucking fools. But I think we already know that's the case and you're already furiously typing up the DMCA notices.

  • I want to start off saying that I don't disagree in principle with anything you've said. Still examining whether I disagree in practice with anything you've said, as well.

I believe that the most basic priority of someone living in the anglosphere should be promoting anti-imperialism by whatever means are available to them...

I don't support the U.S. playing Team America: World Police as we have done historically and regularly, but I don't see how (not why) that can be my top priority. After all, I'm the "boat dealer" (I benefit from the system), so other than the fact that politicians for whom that would be their top priority would likely align on my other priority issues, how does making American Imperialism my top priority protect my children's future from the growing fascist movement? (I'm not being hypothetical here, I worry for what will happen to them if GOP fascism isn't stopped.)

...and to build further means the organizing with others and constructing “dual power,” structures of power that operate in parallel to state power to organize people towards various social goods

Absolutely. Unions, group activism, etc. is definitely the way and means to bring about change. Unfortunately, and I know you're going to call this a cop-out on my part, with my life situation I don't have time to participate in all of that. I have a unique situation at home, I have to work to provide, and so on. Yes, I'm aware that this is what they want in order to keep us all from being able to change the system... but that is how it is for me. I will give my support to any groups who can go out and promote that change, however.

democracy has limited power and the aristocracy has the ability to prevent popular movements from gaining “too much” power

Without a doubt. I don't know what the answer is to enact RCV (or similar), but I do know that nothing changes without RCV. I really don't see how we can convince politicians to push for RCV when that’s exactly what will let some measure of power slip from their hands. A few states (Alaska, Maine, & Nevada) have done it now, and North Carolina had it but their legislature “thought better of it” and repealed it.

Wanted to save this part for last, having said all of the above -

have you considered reading Marx yourself

I'm not saying I won't, but I don't know that it would change much. I know Marx is likely fundamentally sound ideology, but ultimately it won't change the basic, almost animalistic / survivalistic if you will, priorities that I have to focus on as voter in the middle of the U.S. - namely, stopping the growing fascism movement. Until then, I would just be sitting there reading and agreeing with everything, saying "yeah I know that makes sense... yes that's exactly right, etc."... and it would inevitably change nothing and most probably just make me more frustrated about the shit situation we're in. There is absolutely a large portion of the population that needs to have that shit Clockwork-Oranged into their skulls, though.

I appreciate you offering a tl;dr, since I had already read your other comment but it’s a bit lengthy.

And I say this with no ill intent, but "Hello pot, my name's kettle". 😁

  • You're right, it's a chicken and the egg scenario. I really don't know how we can convince politicians to push for RCV when that's exactly what will let some measure of power slip from their hands. A few states (Alaska, Maine, & Nevada) have done it now, and North Carolina had it but their legislature "thought better of it" and repealed it.

More than any one political issue, this needs to happen first for any real change to occur.

  • I know there are many different front ends with which you can participate in Lemmy servers via the Fediverse, but haven't gotten into it enough to make a recommendation. I've just began checking out https://kbin.social which might be closer to what you're looking for?

I agree that the Lemmy UI isn't old reddit, but it's enough unlike new reddit that I'm comfortable with it. Sure it's got some 'wasted' / open space, but it works well.

  • Well that's just the thing - there are good use cases for VDI, and that's all this really seems to be at its core. If that's all it is, then it seems like Microsoft just once again repackaging things and calling them their own.

  • I mean, that is the upside and design intent of Lemmy. Be the change you want to see and stand up an IT focused Lemmy server. I don't have the time or resources for that, but I can help by contributing to and moderating this community on what is currently the largest Lemmy server. Something tells me there will be a number of iterations before the Lemmy-verse settles on which servers become predominate.

  • Agreed on all points. Just to add, I also believe that not much else can happen on the political stage unless we implement a ranked choice or other alternative voting system, to allow 3rd parties some chance of gaining traction.

  • I found that I only encountered it when viewing 'All > Hot' or 'All > New', I believe. I thought it was someone spamming the server with the same thing to different subs, but I see now that it's a bug.

So for now I stick with 'Subscribed > Hot' or 'Subscribed > New', and I subscribed to a crapload of subs.

  • Alright then, what's your answer? March on the capital, gun down anyone who stands in your way? Read Marx to people in public until they all vote for an effectively nonexistent communist party?

There's what I wish for society, and then there's reality. Until something changes, I choose to continue to live in reality.

I'll refer you to my comment below as to what I have to say on the subject. If you have anything in specific that you'd like to pose a rebuttal to I'd like to hear it, but my guess is that all I'll hear from you is spouting more idealistic nonsense.

(edit) - To boil it down to a single point: Until we get rid of our first past the post, winner take all voting system, nothing changes and no 3rd party can take hold in this country. The only option for those of us who have to live here is to vote for the party that has at least some progressive politicians in its ranks. With FPTP voting, doing otherwise is the exact same result as voting for the fascist GOP.

  • I'd like to see whatever everyone wants to post about, and would also encourage you to be the change you want to see. I'm more into the Microsoft space myself but manage a handful of Linux servers (which I typically never have to bother with unless I'm standing another one up, and our team manages patching), though I'm not sure where good sources of news & updates would be for Linux information.

  • More posts to come (from me, at least) starting later in the week. In the meantime, post what you want to discuss with the community! 👍
