That is very surprising, last I heard it had to catch up with having popular applications. Is this due to how package dependencies differ on Nix vs what people think of traditionally as packages?
Yeah doing standard computer stuff is great, though the limitations start to hurt if it is a personal device. Some odd design decisions too like the Settings menu being unforgivably bad and unmaximizable for no reason, Finder being always open which messed with my OCD, a few other things. For hardware the prices for increased storage or RAM are highway robbery and can't be done yourself. Plus I'm pretty into open source and Linux is more customizable. That being said, Homebrew is pretty great these days, and Little Snitch or an open source equivalent does a good job of blocking telemetry so I could probably make it work if I had to.
I've gotta say, as a long time Apple hater, it is not bad these days, especially with their incredible hardware at the best value per dollar they've ever had. I use my Mac as much as possible at work when Windoes isn't absolutely required (I'm not allowed to use Linux)
I can't agree. Cheating is inherently a lack of honor and cutting corners. I don't want a doctor that I can't trust and who takes the easiest possible route in my treatment. That's already bad enough as it is, just saying "it'll get better probably, let me know if not. That'll be 5000 dollars". Plus you have to actually know stuff to grt certain jobs. School is not a useless ritualistic song and dance.
Rage bait is the worst internet trend to date. Yeah yeah, I know trolling always existed, but it was actually funny sometimes, done to bait assholes or uppity people usually, and done for the love of the game. Rage bait is just doing something out if pocket or legitimately bad just to get eyeballs on you which now translates to free money for them because the world is a fucked up place that rewards people with no principles now.
It does mean you have more control over your device in most circumstances, especially given the imminent closing of side loading from stock Android. There is certainly more privacy on most popular ROMs which is control over my personal information, and more security from not being rooted does also imply more control. Everyone's threat model is different, but personally I am more worried about viruses or the rise of fascism leading to brown shirts confiscating my phone and accessing private information than I am concerned about maybe not being able to automate something in Tasker that would be fun to mess with. Again, as you say, it is a personal choice, but it has just been a LONG time since I've even bumped into anything that can only be done rooted. And last time I did, I think it was something that would have made it a single use device for that purpose, in which case rooting is a lot less dangerous. Android has come a long way with having sand boxing both work and having workarounds for functionality. Linux is learning a lot from it, but immutable distros are not quite in the same level yet. In fact some of the stuff I used to do on a rooted phone you can just do with built in Android 16 terminal or Termux.
Is there EVEN MORE control when rooted? Sure. But the use cases for that keep diminishing, and in some cases not desirable in my opinion. Trackers and invasive permissions in apps are bad enough as it is, I don't want a system where I can give kernel level access to a random multiplayer game that I install with one click like on Windows.
For most people wanting to get off stock Android on the degoogle sub, the things they are trying to accomplish will be done better with a custom ROM, as well as prevent them from potential exposure that they may not even be aware is a tradeoff.

This sounds like a settings problem, especially since Firefox works. If I had to guess, you have scripts blocked. The modern web is made of JavaScript. You may have to let that one go. That's the only setting I've personally experienced that breaks things besides Tor connections or VPN which can technically be built into a browser.
I hope so. On the up side, it largely killed my social media addiction. Now I am learning stuff for fun again.
