  • .. although Israel is not one of the council's 47 voting members and did not always attend meetings

Sounds like they weren't 'engaged' all that much in human rights in the first place then anyways, so whatever.

  • Bypassing adblockers, paywalls etc. are often called 'theft' by mainstream media and their corporate owners. So adblockers (such as uBlock Origin) and similar methods, by the media owners' own definitions, can be considered piracy though that definition should be disputed as merely viewing a web page doesn't deny it from others.

  • This one seems to work well... at least for nyt.

    https://www.removepaywall.com/

Honestly I just wait for other sources without paywalls if I hit one to avoid giving them any clicks :)

  • Silly rabbit, did you think paying for a subscription would protect from advertising forever?

I am old enough to remember when cable TV was sold to the masses on the premise that if we bought cable, we wouldn't have to see commercials, since our subscriptions would pay for the service.

It's a ratchet system; annoy you, convince you to pay to make the annoyance go away, then wait a while and introduce another annoyance.. and convince you to pay somre more on top of that to get rid of that annoyance... rinse, repeat.

Take to the seas, my lad (or lassie). yarrrrr.

  • Ah, yes I forgot that angle -- that period of indentured servitude (slavery) for the hope of being allowed to participate in the illusion of "The American Dream" ...

  • Interesting -- did the original patents for MP3 not apply to streaming formats at all then? That would imply streaming MP3 data has been free for much longer than the "mp3 file format" itself. Would not suprise me if true, as the originators probably did not foresee the huge increase in internet bandwidth available to regular people, nor the concept of the streaming industry in general.

  • Awesome, thank you. Anyone who misses baconreader for reddit will feel mostly at home with Jerboa.

  • ..and for some subs, the mods just outright banned posts, comments or the users posting, for even mentioning the words 'lemmy', 'fediverse', and so on. (happened to me)

I'd suggest DMing users on reddit individually whenever you see someone asking about options for other communities and social media, directing them to lemmy, but that'll take a lot more effort. AFAIK reddit isn't (yet) going so far as to monitor direct messages between users to censor mention of the fediverse.

  • Hell yeah. I would also hope as many engineers as possible resign from SpaceX, Tesla and the Boring Company, but sadly too many of them probably a) have no problem with their boss's ethics or b) are financially stressed and are afraid to do so, or c) are addicted to the lifestyle enabled by their pay grade.

The biggest trick capitalism pulled on all of us is keeping wages 'not too low, not too high' so we are all not starving, yet afraid to walk away from our jobs.

  • And I agree about FPTP. I still have a grudge against the Liberals for promising to abolish that in 2015 and then reneging on it.

Agreed, it's my number 1 reason I would never, ever have voted for Trudeau -- didn't vote for him thee first term either as I suspected he would renege. (Reason number 2: he also reneged on his promise to reign in CSE and CSIS for domestic spying and privacy invasions).

If there isn't an organized strategic voting campaign nationwide, I may have to bite the bullet and vote Liberal this time though, if Carney is the leader, since the percentages seem to be leaning to them being the only way to prevent a hard right-wing shift here in Canada.

  • If churches, synagogues, schools etc. are now unsafe from ICE raids it's time people thought about making safehouses if they want to help resistance -- but how many modern homes have basements or attics that can have easily-hidden access?

I've been thinking, could supporters outside of the US offer mailing services for mifepristone etc. via stealth via sending baked goods, keychains with hollow storage or similar that can obscure pills within? Such measures will likely be necessary to keep supplies available in restricted states. Someone should organize a covert sign-up system for women to request mailings from outside the country.

  • So... they're saying SpaceX is too big to fail and has a monopoly position?

Sounds like it should be nationalized and/or broken up then!

Does no one remember, not so long ago, when VC funds would always ask if a startup was aiming to compete with Microsoft, or be acquired by it? What a defeatist and hollow view of markets and society.

  • No no, I certainly do NOT want a 2 party system. But if the other parties could guide people to the idea of strategic voting via some sort of official but temporary alliance ... that's the idea. Something, anything we can do to prevent fragmentation which would let the CPC rise up through a divided middle.

FPTP (First Past the Post) is so, so broken.

  • As someone posted on the forums there,

FFS….the world is literally CRAWLING with billionaires made rich and richer still on the backs of these very open source products. Can not one..ONE…of these bastards much less a small group of these global leeches set up a permanent fund so these projects can go forward into the future without bullshit like this ?

Maybe they should just do nothing, and wait for the shitstorm. After a week or so, put it out there, that maybe one of the big rich companies that have leeched off the work of open source for literally decades should, you know, STEP UP and support this critical infrastructure.

A sort of 'general strike', if you will. Since that seems to be the Zeitgeist these days.

  • Libs, NDP and Green just need to unify for this election cycle. It's a strategic move they have to make. Can they do that, run as a single ballot?

  • Yes! Every Canadian municipality and provincial department should do this.
