Why Is BC Ferries Cancelling Sailings? Bad Jobs

I call shenanigans on the Tyee. You'll note they don't mention average or median wages. Those folks waving signs are making silly amounts of money to do so. Yes, the entry to get those jobs is hard (hence the on call etc for entry folks) because the payoff for the most basic of jobs is huge.

So they're in, as far as I recall, rather the opposite problem. Because wages are so high, they don't want to organize each sailing with redundant crew (if they're making $40ish an hour, and each sailing needs a few as some roles are specialized well, you can see how the costs would rocket up pretty quickly.)

What keeps BC Ferries from having a normal employment structure? If it was never profitable, why was it spun out of being a crown corporations in the first place?
