So, where is the catch?
From my reading it was successful and just needs to be refined to increase efficiency in the reaction, but mainly the laser that triggers the reaction.
They're saying the NIF wasn't made to be a power plant, just a research facility, so now they have to figure out how to make it sustainable. Also, much more work has gone into tokamak systems, so laser fusion is somewhat behind.
