The early Source engine didn't have much in the way of volumetrics. To get the godray effect, like sunlight shining through a window into a dusty room, they stacked long planes with a translucent, emissive material. Looking at it from the front, the grid pattern is obvious, but from the side, the "haze" appears to thicken gradually.
