They're been pushed here fairly heavily but anyone I talk to in the field says that given our weather conditions that don't really provide a good ROI. In milder weather they may save a bit but they're also more expensive to purchase and install.
Seem to work in Sweden pretty well, ground source heat pumps will absolutely work in - 30 c ambient temps, modern air source can apparently work pretty effectively into that temp range. Yes you have a backup heatsource to go with the heat pumps, but it's kinda baffling to me that they aren't more popular, especially in the southern parts of the country.
Grabbing a years of monthly averages for a city I've worked out of a lot in the winter Grande Prairie , 2006 because I wanted to see monthly numbers, mean minimums for the entire winter were well within that operating range, yeah there are extreme min temperatures beyond - 30 but that's not every day for quite a few people, heat pumps can, and absolutely do, work in cold environments
