Trivia:
Last regular strip prior to syndication, and the last overall to use the header.
Readapted for the September 23, 1978 strip in syndication several months later:
Confused about what this strip is? See the first post here
Th-th-that's all, folks! This is the last strip from the beforetimes. Hope you've enjoyed me posting these, and here's another few odds & ends:
The first appearances of Garfield since United Feature Syndicate accepted Garfield, and the first where he has stripes. These were shown with a "goodbye" message from The Pendleton Times, and were also the first to use a United Feature Syndicate copyright line. The second strip was adapted for the August 26, 1978 strip in the syndicated version.
Fascinating info. Point of order tho: Jim Davis sez "dogs like Snoopy and Marmaduke have been standard characters on comic pages, but there has never been a cat". Akshully wikipedia sez Krazy Kat comic strip started syndication in 1913, Felix the Cat in 1923, and Heathcliff in 1973. And ofc Top Cat had a comic book in the 60s and 70s beyond the 30-ep animation, but I dunno if it was ever a syndicated strip. (I prefer Garf tho!?!!)
Jim Davis never spoke about this earlier Jon comic, it was found accidentally in the archives of the local newspaper... so it's not really unexpected his memories are not perfectly aligned with what actually happened in the the early days.
