I'll be honest I'm not hopeful about this one. I've a horrible feeling it's going to be overly woke and aimed at Gen Z
I did not expect you, of all people,to complain about wokeness, but I do kind of get where you're coming from. the original was fucking messy (I swear that Buffy is the only person who didn't rape and/or cheat on someone), and I can definitely see them overcorrecting and basically turning to the camera and saying "rape is bad".
Yep, wokeness to me isn't inclusivity, I usually find it patronising. I agree with you, it was atrociously handled eg when Spike tried to rape Buffy and very little was done with it. I'm concerned it's going to be really OTT, clunking corrections. Especially as they're in the shadow of the Joss Whedon allegations...
I'll be honest, with that attitude you'll likely hate it even if it is good. The world is getting younger, not older, so if media catering to younger audiences doesn't appeal to you for some reason, then you will not find much made for that audience appealing.
Out of curiosity, was Kpop Demon Hunters too GenZ and woke for you? Because movies like Amazon's "War of the World's" are what's being made for your audience bracket. It's not woke, it's not GenZ, nothing in it really happens, so people won't really complain about it. It's also completely forgettable, and bad.
So I'd be far more concerned that the new Buffy show becomes another bad and forgettably bland corporate IP rehash like Rings of Power, Young Sheldon, Charmed, War of the World's, and everything else that is coming out now. Because vocal audiences like you only chime up when something is vaguely woke, not when something is incredibly bad, mediocre, or stupid. So we're getting a lot more bad, mediocre, and incredibly stupid content aimed at adults, while kids are the only ones actually getting new good things. (Spiderverse, TMNT Mutant Mayhem, Lego Movies)
Because in my opinion, the extreme mediocrity of safe corporate bullshit is ruining every IP it touches far faster than Gen Z is. So I feel your concerns about this show being bad because it might be "too GenZ or woke" incredibly misplaced. At worst, it'll just be bad to you.
I see it differently. As a disabled lgbt female I'm passionate about inclusion and representation in media. However, some modern shows put inorganic representation in, a lot of politics, and try desperately to be woke. I find it doesn't work, and it's often patronising and insulting. A lot of people who tune into the new Buffy show will presumably do it because they watched the show at the time. If it's aimed predominantly at Gen Z, then they're cutting out a lot of their viewers and longtime fans. I feel that would be the wrong choice.
I wonder if they can keep it as "normal", silly and light as they did in the OG show. Probably not, Anglo Saxon/Western culture has changed too much in the past two decades...
