‘It’s pretty amazing’: Sixties Scoop Survivor returns home to Manitoba 50 years after being taken from his home

When I was in treatment for alcohol addiction myself, I met a man who went through this.

I remember him telling me that he was taken from his family and placed in a group home for kids where he was treated like shit.

He recalled to me, coming home from elementary school to watch cartoons and have lunch, and seeing an advertisement on TV ” will you adopt this child”. It was his picture.

He was "adopted" by an American family, where he was treated like a slave, abused and beaten.

At the age of 11 he escaped and found his way back across the Canadian border.

- My ex husband went theough a similar hell in the Scoop. I dunno how he survived as long as he did with all the trauma he lived through.
