I bought the book. I started to struggle when it came to wiring and animating him, but it was so cool to have a professionally written and printed book about FOSS applications back then.
I don’t get the second picture. Is that what beginners are rendering these days or is it a joke?

It's a empty plate with a few crumbs on it... But if you have to explain it I guess it doesn't sell very well.
