So no tariffs if built in the us, but tariffs on the building materials coming in to build the chips since America imports these? Am I getting it right that there'll be tariffs regardless? So why would a company build in the us then?

I guess his thought process is that chip builder shops will just pop up everywhere because of America's entrepreneurial spirit!

They won't. Because tariffs are a tax on the consumer. Not like America can get advanced chips from anywhere else. Remember yall, Trump could impose a 1000% increase in all goods and his quality of life won't go down. Wealthy people don't care how expensive things get! They have so much money it doesn't matter. A gallon of milk could literally cost a million dollars and the top 1% could afford milk for every meal and to take baths in it.

I really hope that many companies, not American ones of course, decide that the 100% tariff is fine for Americans to pay, and create all their chips in any other country in the world for the rest of the world to use.

Every single news organization seems to be fudging what "build in the US" means, and no one seems to dare ask Trump what he means by that. So all of these articles are ambiguous and confusing. We have to assume he means to bully companies into making their own chips in the USA, which shows that Trump has no grasp of the difficulties involved in doing that. All he will achieve is to disrupt the business of all electronics companies doing business in the USA and raise the price of their products.
Edit: US chip manufacturing seems to have increased over the last few years, with Intel making a lot of chips in the USA and TSMC making plenty of AMD chips in its Arizona fab too. So perhaps the goal of Trump's move isn't so crazy, but the implementation is so crude it will cause more problems than it solves, at least in the near future.
