NATO to propose upping members' defence spending to 5% in line with Trump demand

NATO’s Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday said he will propose that members increase their overall military spending target to 5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) at the pact’s next summit. To reach that number, 3.5 percent of GDP will go toward core military spending, and 1.5 percent will be made up of defence and security-related investments. “There’s broad support,” Rutte said.
