Insults are an attack and a lack of respect by default, they cannot be considered flattery under any circumstances.
The opposite case is criticism, which, even if it is harsh, can be made with greatest possible respect. Besides, to make a critique, first you have to analyze the work properly, that in itself shows commitment, and THAT'S flattering.
It is not good to assume, but maybe you confused both terms.
