Smells like landlord bullshit.
Good. Fuck landlords. They're ghouls, every single one of them.
- Every single one of then? Even my landlord who has never raised my rent, drove me to and from the hospital when I had emergencies, and has regularly offered to help out in other ways too?
  I get that many landlords are not saints, but being a landlord doesn't automatically make someone a bad person.
  
  Yeah, one of my landlords was a gem.
  Kept the rent low, let us have pets, did the maintenance quickly and in person (he was a tradesman), let us do whatever to the place as long as we didn't ruin it, and was genuinely a decent guy. He gave us glowing references for our future home too.
  I felt sad moving out of that home, it was an absolute steal in the middle of a very expensive city. The guy just wanted to rent out his old place to some nice folks.
- You’re kinda silly.
So if the LL had withheld the deposit he wouldnt have been on the hookbfor the rest of it?
- Nah, he still kicked them out to sell it.
- It would have made his story more believable, but it would not necessarily (or I think, likely) have saved his case, given all the other evidence.
