Ukraine Drone Damages Russian Oil Tanker

  • A Ukrainian drone attack in the Black Sea damaged a Russian tanker in the Kerch Strait south of the Crimean Bridge, Russian officials claimed on Saturday. Al Jazeera (LR: 2 CP: 1)
  • Vasyl Malyuk, the head of Ukraine's Security Service, said that "such special operations are conducted in the territorial waters of Ukraine and are completely legal," adding any such explosions are "an absolutely logical and effective step with regard to the enemy." Euronews
  • While Ukraine hasn't publicly claimed the attack, Malyuk told the BBC a sea drone carrying 450kg of TNT explosive had been used in the overnight strike conducted jointly with the Ukrainian navy. BBC News (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • Meanwhile, Russia's Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport said that the oil tanker's engine room was damaged, all its 11 crew members were safe, and the carrier remained afloat. RT (LR: 3 CP: 1)
  • Saturday's attack is the second in as many days involving sea drones. According to Kyiv, a Russian naval combat ship was severely damaged on Friday after a Ukrainian naval drone struck it near Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. Moscow, however, claims it repelled the assault. Reuters (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • In a separate development, a meeting of national security advisers and other senior officials from about 40 countries has started in Saudi Arabia to discuss a peaceful resolution. Though the talks exclude Russia, the Kremlin reportedly said it would "keep an eye" on the meeting. Guardian (LR: 2 CP: 5)

Pro-Ukraine narrative:

  • The sea drone attacks are not only logical and legal but necessary to offset Russia's aggression. Either the targets in Crimea will reduce Russia's fighting capacity or enable future offensives that can bring this awful war to a conclusion.
    Ukrainska Pravda

Pro-Russia narrative:

  • The US shouldn't back Ukrainian strikes against Crimea as it will entail immediate retaliatory strikes. Russian warships will continue to repel and destroy Ukraine's sea drones as they are nothing short of terrorist attacks, as the peninsula is legally part of the Russian Federation.
    RT (LR: 3 CP: 1)

Nerd narrative:

  • There's a 7% chance that if Kyiv gains more than 50 square km (19.3 square miles) of territory in Crimea, Russia will use nuclear weapons against Ukraine before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
