French village disorients drivers with crisscrossed white lines

"The mayor says it’s a way of encouraging drivers to slow down in an area where the speed limit is supposed to be 20 kph but where drivers can sometimes top 50."

I guess this is a version of what we call "traffic calming" around here (Western Canada), but we do it with medians and curbs. This looks like it's going to cause a collision.
