lemmy.one disables downvotes. While I do sorely miss them; it also helps me a lot.
No longer do I have to do a deep "which shade of grey is this post?" dive. I ask myself "does this break a rule of my local instance?" then Report it if it does.
Lollll shit, I want to be able to downvote things
Too bad. Welcome to lemmy; where downvotes don't always mean anything.
There's really no reason to downvote in the kind of environment that Lemmy has created! Everyone is respectful and kind and every post is so wholesome!
Voting is used differently here than it is on Reddit. Here we have no useless karma reputation collecting. So voting serves the sole purpose of sorting posts/comments by relevance. I used the downvote on Reddit very rarely but used to upvote frequently what i liked. Here, i would vote less but use downvotes more.
Upvoted your comment because of the information that followed-up. 🙂
On reddit I don't downvote users unless someone is purposely saying something hateful, but I downvote all the ads. It doesn't do much, but it does something and is a little cathartic.
Mostly agreed.
Except for tankies. I see them, I downvote, I move on 😎
Based answer. Tankies aren't welcome.
I actually disagree. I think downvotes are very useful for when someone posts the wrong kind of content to a niche community without it necessarily breaking the rules. a good example would be reddit's r/bonehurtingjuice. a core element of a bhj is that the comic is unedited except for the text, so if someone posts a comic with an edited last panel that shows an extra character, it would make sense to downvote that post to indicate that it doesn't fit the sub well, even if the resulting comic was still funny/good.
idk maybe that's toxic, but I think it's a better solution than outright deleting content like that when the content might still have value
hmmm thats an interesting dilemma, no upvotes means no way for users to bury "bad" content. But downvoting definitely contributes to "toxicity". its gonna be cool to see how this all plays out. i wonder because when youtube got rid of thumbs down i was upset, but part of me is happy there is no downvoting here. i think the difference is this place is "small" and so i feel a need to work with people to have an outcome we both like because its in both of our best interest. where as on a platform with millions of users you almost don't care what individuals think because there's tens of hundreds of thousands of more people that are gonna come along and my lizard brain just wants to be accepted by the masses. i mean it makes sense, we as humans havent had to deal with the opinion of millions until now, 100 years ago we'd all be worried about what Jeffery nextdoor thought of us or whatever.
I think the solution is to report the post if it violates rules of the community. Reporting doesn't always mean it's racist, homophobic, etc. I haven't reported any posts on Lemmy (no need to yet), but on Reddit you could choose why you were reporting the post.
You can also just be more proactive in upviting the posts that you like. That will still bury bad posts.
That is the case in reddit, but here people tend to stick to the topic of communities, and even if someone posts something that doesn't fit in, our communities are small and a little bit of off-topic posting doesn't hurt anyone.
Totally feel this way also.
I don’t know. I’m getting kinda tired of the constant celebrity posts. Still upvote because I want people to keep being here but wtf. There’s enough celebrities being pushed into our lives I feel.
I know, it's exhausting. My thumbs are working overtime upvoting.
It feels homey. Like everybody is a close friend here
I hope this doesn't go away if lemmy explodes in popularity, it's definitely one of my favorite parts of the platform.
Hahaha... I'm really glad that so many instances are blocking LemmyGrad.ml because those guys are major-league assholes. :)
*edit: For those of you who don't know what LemmyGrad is - it's tankies (they hate being called that, but that's the term for them)... hard-line communists who belittle anyone who isn't cool with mass-murder.
I'm in the same boat, but I also don't think I could join an instance with downvotes disabled. Status quo is great, but there are times in which downvotes are necessary - seems a bit shortsighted to disable them
The weird thing is that on kbin.social you see who has upvoted/downvoted comments and posts (not only your own comments and posts either). I don't know if this is just part of the activityPub protocol and don't know if it is visible on any of the lemmy websites, but it sparked interesting discussions whether this will cause problems or if it actually enforces people to use the downvote button as "does not contribute" instead of "I disagree".
Honestly, I wondered about this... I should look more into that. I'm fine with my own upvotes/downvotes being public on this account - i probably wouldn't want the same on a work or NSFW account, and can understand why it'd be an issue on personal accounts for some. A necessary evil for federation.
Honestly, the main thing for me is retaining the ability to downvote disinformation, bad faith arguments, and excessively offtopic/low quality contributions to a community. Definitely not an issue at Lemmys current size, it'd be a massive issue as it grew.
Technical note, of course the systen needs to remember who voted and who didn't. I heard that it can cause considerable network load at the servers.
It's really going to be hard not to say r/AngryUpVote now...
Does lemmy.world support downvotes?
Yes
Here is a list of server configurations: https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances
So downvotes are disabled even for communities not on lemmy.one? So in other communities people can downvote me but I can't downvote them? Arg, I picked the wrong server.
Seems to be that way :\
this is how i used to roll on reddit, upvotes for participation. not agree/disagree.
running an instance with no downsvotes.
The arrow colors being reversed of reddit has been throwing me off quite a bit.
I think red makes more sense for downvotes IMHO.
The downvotes are red? I didn't even notice!
All the comments ive seen have been really positive or neutral I haven't even seen trolling on here yet which is so refreshing and strange cause im so use to there being so many trolls/hate comments its honestly been such a great experience
Agreed it seems people are much more well intentioned than reddit.
I think this is just a case of the rule of 1% not applying here, but the small wholesome environment definitely helps.
