It's my subjective impression, but the series feel a bit too repetitive and a bit too reliant on gag for a fantasy one. Give it a try though, it might feel different for you.
EDIT: although note, it isn't so bad as the Elfen Lied anime, where the only thing worth was the intro. (A shame, because the manga was decent.)
The anime also take off a lot of the context from the manga, and this completely destroyed its message/"theme" about "what means 'to be a monster' and 'to be a human', when both behave the same?". That made the violence and gore feel gratuitous.
I still haven't read the manga, If I am honest with myself I think its because the anime turned me off some much. I should probably add it to my read list.
I can relate to that. The anime doesn't make stuff up, but it does remove things from context, so they simply look like "gore for the sake of gore".
If you're interested Brynhildr in the Darkness (Gokukoku no Brynhildr) is from the same author, and I think that it's a bit more approachable in this aspect. There's still some "weird" stuff, though, so be warned.
