Blade Runner, Altered Carbon, and the Relevancy of Cyberpunk

This video is a bit old since it mentions the "new" series Altered Carbon and Mr. Robot but it does a great job of explaining the origins and ingredients that led to cyberpunk.

  • Good video. One thing about the 80s cyberpubk aesthetic is that it didn't predict the minimalism of today. We enjoy our technology at smaller form factors with fewer wires or moving parts in simple colors.

    • I wonder if that's more a fascination with the low-lifes of a cyberpunk future. The "street finds its own uses for things" crowd. I feel like tech minimalism would be seen as more "clean" and thus "high class" from that perspective. So having wires everywhere makes it look more custom and cobbled together.

      • Good point. Even headphones that aren't bluetooth look cheap and poor now.

    • I'm glad it didn't, because the bulky 80s tech looks cool as hell and I'm glad it's a thing.

      • Oh I'm right there with you, it's probably my favorite part of the cyberpunk aesthetic.
