Book (Album) Club Week 14: Gift Rap by The Cross Movement

Welcome to Week 14 of our Book (Album) Club! Gift Rap by The Cross Movement!

I went seasonal for this week. I know Christmas is almost a week out, but doing a Christmas album on the 26th seemed lame so what the hell.

Doesn’t matter if this is your 100th time listening to the album or you listen to the album the first time right before posting!

December 26th: The Falling Season by Masta Ace

January 2nd: The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem

January 9th: Ipecac Neat by P.O.S.

  • I was hesitant to post this album when I was trying to find something seasonal, as I usually think of Christian Rap as pretty lame. That said, I wanted to do these threads to try new stuff (and get other people to do the same) so I figured why not.

That said, this is very much Christian Rap. With the first song sporting a hook of

It's Christmas time, relax your mind and unwind, yeah

Full of peace, full of joy, I'll tell you why, yeah (2X)

    It's Jesus Christ, yeah

I was pretty sure I had made a mistake. That said, it honestly kind of grew on me. Came Down is good with something a little soulful on the hook. Then I got to the middle of the album and hit Wisemen. This song goes hard as fuck and I do not care that it is basically a religious story. This is some solid, upper tier, story telling and the beat sounds amazing in my car. Kings Speech was another highlight to me, though the beat was a little overdone? Or maybe the mix was weird, I don't know exactly what it is but something is slightly off that stops it from being on the level of *Came Down *and Wisemen

Overall, I will probably never listen to this again, but I didn't hate it. Except Wisemen, which I've actually added to my favorites list on Spotify, until Christmas is over.
