The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of sound waves to break down tumors—a technique called histotripsy—in humans for liver treatment.

Technique developed at the University of Michigan-histotripsy- provides a noninvasive alternative to surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer. Histotripsy works by using targeted ultrasound waves for killing tumor cells. Beyond tumor destruction, the technique may also activate the immune system against cancer cells, as seen in a few preclinical studies involving rodents. If the technique lives up to its promise, this could transform cancer care beyond recognition
