No, it's not you, the joke just doesn't work.
"Anubis" is the Greek version of his name, so it's probably pronounced something like AH-noo-beece, with the emphasis on the first syllable.
So bus is really pronounced beece. Thank you.

Nah, it's just not a great pun.
plus a lot of Egyptian pronunciation was made up in the 1930s, and nowadays we know differently but the original names stuck
