Rudolph had antlers on Christmas, as a reindeer, that makes Rudolph a she not a he.
I mean he also had a glowing nose and could fly. So perhaps scientific accuracy wasn't the main priority of the author.
I never thought of Rudolph as a boy but now that I think about it the pronouns used in the song do kind of imply it.
