I don't know what you did wrong because I got -2147483642 milks.
Sounds like a stray photon flipped your sign bit. You can flip it back with this:
num_milks ^= 1 << (sizeof(num_milks) * 8 - 1);
Unless the variable is named "countMinusOne" then I'm bringing back 6
