U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.
"I just hate bailing out europe again"
"I fully share your loathing of european free-loading"
(screeneshots in the article)
if any of you were wondering what our "allies" think of us.
Honestly the biggest takeaway for me is that apparently, they talk like this in private as well. In other words, they do seem to actually believe what they say. Or at least believe that they have to keep up appearances to each other.
Even more disturbing is that if we have evidence of one Signal chat that must mean they regularly use non-official communications channels to discuss things like this. That means no formal record retention, no safeguards against export control and protection of classified information, and no pathway for transparency. These communications are entirely FOIA proof such that the American people have no way to even attempt to obtain information through legal channels from government officials.
Isn't every top politician keeping part of their professional communication out of such requests at this point? Not just Hillary's #butteremails but I seem to remember instances where Ursula vdL did that, even Merkel texted certain things (definitely [non-sarcastically] just a coincidence that all of the people I named are women).
Up until I read this I thought they were just evil. But no, they are actually morons who really believe that the US protects Europe out of the goodness of its heart.
