U.S. President Donald Trump will pause new tariffs on Mexico for one month after Mexico agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to stem the flow of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, he said on Monday on social media.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the agreement also includes a U.S. commitment to act to prevent trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico. The two leaders spoke by phone on Monday, just hours before U.S. tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada were set to take effect.
The two counties will use the month-long pause to engage in further negotiations, Trump said.
I knew Mexico and Canada would blink first (well, Canada hasn’t yet, but it’s a matter of time).
Now the bully thinks that he can wave his favorite toy (tariffs) around and get whatever he wants. Mexico had a ton of leverage in this situation. Where does most American produce come from this time of year? Where are so many cars manufactured that are destined for the US? That’s right, it’s Mexico.
The only source in this article is Trump saying this is what happened. Don't trust what Trump is saying directly. He's already previously mislead to make it seem like other countries caved when they really did almost nothing
Is it really dumb? The tariffs hurt both sides. Things will be much more expensive for us, and because they are more expensive, less of Mexican things will be bought. When Mexico uses retaliatory tariffs, same thing happens, bit this time in reverse.
Mexico doesn't pay the tarrifs, Americans will pay the tarrif. It's just a fancy word for tax. Call it import tax, Trump import tax. Do you see it ? It's meant to make US made more attractive by making imports more expensive. It also make Trump a very unreliable partner. Flip flopping all over the place.
I'm a round about way it does hurt them though, I would assume. Which would make sense on why they don't want it. Just trying to play it out in my head I'd think, ok company X pays more for copper, so they need to charge more. Which means less will probably be purchased, so they in turn order less copper from Mexico due to reduced demand from price sensitivity. So I think it will hurt them eventually.
