my gf just got out of a relationship she liked for a long time

it was over like a week ago. we've been together for almost 8 months now, we had a normal relationship for almost 7-8 months, so I didn't know what to do about her, and she basically just decided she wanted a relationship now, and I wasn't really sure how to handle that, I didn't wanna break up with her or anything, and I was not really sure what to do. She really was an amazing person, but it's not her fault that she was a pretty weirdo. I honestly didn't think she'd like the relationship she's been trying for years and it's probably the first time I've seen her in that way since then. Like, what can I do to prevent this in the future?
