  • Also IT since the mid-2000s. I "need" AI for my job now... because my company went in for it, told us to use it, and cut our support staff by 40% over the past year so there's not enough time to actually work and investigate case issues properly anymore and we're all completely overloaded. We're basically a skeleton crew now. It can only be an effort to increase perceived value for a sell-off, or the company is in a death spiral. Probably both.

    I've had it with this.

  • Well, these days it can get pretty expensive for that storage. But yeah, I've got like 59k tracks, nearly 6k albums on my NAS in FLAC, it takes up just over 1.5 TB. And FLAC is just great quality, in some cases better than the old CDs I used to buy when you can find it in 24-bit/48Khz or 24/96.

  • me_irl

  • Just be sure to use something like Spek to to inspect the files if you use Soulseek. I've used it to find some obscure music I couldn't purchase, and sometimes people literally just re-encode MP3 files to FLAC, the data is still lost, reconverting won't recover it.

  • me_irl

  • OGG is great for space, but still lossy. I keep my collection as FLAC. Modern phones have a ton of storage and not much to do with it anyway, so I've got like 20+ GB of music on mine.

  • Wow, unexpected P!atD reference.

  • Same, but for me it's the "Useless loser gets isekai'd to a fantasy world where he's somehow not a deadbeat loser and gains a harem" trope.

  • This is good news, and maybe there can be more quality anime and manga in the future.

Still very disturbing that this wasn’t their policy already though…

I’ve been an anime fan since the 1980s, but have fallen off hard since 2012 or so. There are so few good series these days and a lot of it just seems like embarrassing juvenile pervy crap nowadays. There’s not much to like about it

  • Who exactly do you think is voting for people like El-Sayed? Venezuelans perhaps?

What kind of take even is this?

  • I'm in an IT role, similar happened. My team previously had 12 people on it, now there's 7 with 1-2 out of office on any given day. I think I've gone from an average of 15-18 cases with 5-7 active at any time to around 40+ cases with 15-25 active on any given day. This means my quality of work has dropped as I no longer have time for deeper investigation of issues, and I've gotten to the point I really don't care. We're not adding back staffing and this is the status quo now.

It's even more brutal because the latest staffing cuts came pretty close before our busiest quarter normally, and after we were told there wouldn't be any more cuts after the previous round several months before.

Honestly... I'm tired of it. I was already fighting burnout in March before the cuts, and now I just don't have the energy to care, I'm just going through the motions and taking care of my mental and physical health outside work hours. I'll probably quit soon, and I expect it'll be a few months at least before I go job hunting, I badly need a break.

  • If you want something really wild where it’s like the band is all doing their own thing and somehow it still works incredibly, check out “Moanin’” by Charles Mingus.

Also, not related, but Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers also have a great tune also called Moanin’.

If you want some more modern jazz, I’d recommend Ibrahim Maalouf and Takuya Kuroda (both are Jazz trumpeters), and Hiromi Uehara (Piano), especially her Trio Project (Alive is one of the most outstanding albums I’ve ever listened to, and Spark is also excellent).

Ezra Collective out of the UK also has some really good stuff.

  • Never saw this performance but I’ll always upvote for Brubeck. Take Five is one of my favorite songs.

With regards to the “noodly jazz thing” when a song is played, often artists will solo in the middle. This is commonly improv’d and done in the key of the song while the other musicians maintain the rhythm. Once the solos conclude the group will return to the main melody.

  • Fuck. Yet another company I donate to behaving like shitheels. Fuck. No more donations I guess.

  • The pic on the left looks lived in, just needed an update on the carpet and cushions. Pic on the right looks like the inside of a lich's phylactery.

  • It’s pretty cool. I have it integrated with Lyrion via a plugin so I can generate a list of related tracks to a song, album, or artist in my play queue, and with lyrics and CLAP analysis it can also generate a music queue via text prompts via phrases like “classical music with cellos” or “relaxing ambient without bass” “aggressive melodic rock” “soothing female vocals” and so on.

As a bonus, we use Wiim Pros and Pro+ units at home to integrate with Lyrion and they can be linked and synced for whole house playback across multiple audio setups.

  • Everything I have is either for entertainment or home automation. Most of it is running on a mini-PC running Proxmox.

    • Jellyfin
    • Asset UPnP
    • Lyrion
    • Navidrome
    • LRCLIB offline lyric server
    • Home Assistant

And I’ve got a containerized Audiomuse-AI instance for music analysis and instant playlist generation.

  • This is pretty cool, and I’m guessing the hardware doesn’t even break a sweat.

My entire setup runs on two AMD mini-PCs, one running a Ryzen 5700u with Proxmox for VM hosting, the other is a 5500u running bare metal Ubuntu.

    Proxmox server hosts:

    • Asset UPnP
    • Jellyfin
    • Audiobookshelf
    • (formerly) Plex (I ditched it)
    • Lyrion
    • LRCLIB offline lyrics server (via LRCLIB DB dump)
    • Home Assistant VM
    • Navidrome instance

Probably a few other things I forgot about…

The bare metal Ubuntu server currently just runs Audiomuse-AI for music analysis, but when not scanning it’s generally idle. Only set this up because early versions of Audiomuse-AI didn’t play nice for me in a VM even when r running with CPU in host mode.

When the hardware gets cheaper I wouldn’t mind a full size server again with a dedicated GPU (I decommissioned my old one due to defective RAM), but for now the mini-PCs have been great. They’re quiet and absolutely sip power, so efficient and quiet.

  • Former smoker who switched to vaping 15 years ago (unflavored e-juice via liquid synthetic nicotine concentrate+ PG/VG)…

Nah, it’s fucking gross. I was exposed to many smokers from a young age, including close relatives and in enclosed spaces. Found myself addicted and craving cigs before I’d ever smoked one, even though I hated the smoke and the smell. FYI - smoking around your kids at all, let alone without being in a well ventilated environment, should be considered child abuse.

I smoked for a decade before switching to vaping, and don’t miss it at all. I don’t hate the nicotine, just burning stinky cigarettes, and to this day it makes me gag.

  • Thankfully I’m not paying it. Even before the AI boom I saw the overall upward trend in power costs. I went solar with battery backup when I had my house built and I bought enough to be at or above 100% offset with net metering. The only thing I pay is the grid-tie connection fee each month, and I get a small check from the power company each year for any overage I generate.
