Victory for Trump as EU backs down on digital taxes in next budget
  • Within an infinitely long timeline, yes. Transitions take time and few are willing to take the immediate financial (and thus political hit) to do so.

One example is pharmaceutical companies, which represent a significant portion of goods produced in Europe. There is no market similar to the US where prices and consumption are both significantly high, so I would argue they would simply take a significant hit.

Economics is rarely done in long term thought because political cycles rely on economic performance. It's stupid, but here we are...

  • Former UK civil service chief calls China's Xi Jinping a ‘dictator’ over Taiwan threats, raises threat of Russia starting further conflicts in Europe beyond Ukraine
  • Thanks! I would agree with your summary largely

One key thing to add from the article:

In February Case took over as the chair of the government-funded “Team Barrow”, which is described as a “partnership between the government, Westmorland and Furness council, and BAE Systems” to support the local economy, which is heavily dependent on BAE’s nuclear submarine shipyard.

I would argue that the comments can be taken lightly and not as an "unofficial" government position, given the above point and that the comments were made at a BAE systems funded event.

  • How Nintendo locked down the Switch 2’s USB-C port and broke third-party docking
  • Yeah the requirements are for USB-C power delivery for devices capable of charging @ (if I remember correctly) > 15W.

The requirement was placed in the radio equipment directive of the EU so unlikely they will amend it to add requirements for USB-C cabled data transmission.

  • What's a really popular TV show you just couldn't get into?
  • They did 2 things well (from an economic perspective) in my vaguely shit memory:

    • built of the success of castaway a few years earlier and survivor
    • marketed the absolute hell out of it pre-release. I remember hundreds of ads showing in the months leading to to it.

It paved the way for a lot of long running, high budget tv shows like heroes, supernatural etc...

    I also severely disliked it.

  • Europeans angry with Musk still aren't buying his cars as Tesla sales drop for fifth month in a row
  • While I think your comment is over simplifying the issue, there is strangely little mention that people's animosity toward Musk are responsible for the downturn. Tesla used to be almost the only premium EV available, now there are significant numbers of competitors.

Additionally, there are too many people with similar views to him in Europe to consider it purely a revolt against him

  • What will the rise of floating solar panels mean for wildlife?
  • I'm sorry. Why are we talking about biodiversity loss with solar? Who is cutting down forests or clearing land to put in panels?

I only see them on rooftops, car parks, farmland (where they have the benefit of adding shade.) etc.

I'm all for more deployment, but no need to shit on non-"floatovoltaics" - rad name btw
