Target foot traffic down for 11th straight week after caving on DEI
  • I would've thought that if his tone wasn't angry, but dude sounded pissed, and it was a very abrupt change when I said why. I'm sure I'm not the first or only person to cancel for that reason but I didn't get "secretly agrees" vibes.

  • Target foot traffic down for 11th straight week after caving on DEI
  • I called to cancel my red card and the guy asked why so I said it was due to their new DEI policies, or lack thereof, and he said, "WELL, wish there was something we could do to keep you but there's not so the account will be closed. Thanks for calling!" And then basically hung up on me. It definitely made me feel like the adult in the relationship.

  • What are some places in Europe with a low price level and worth traveling to?
  • I think most of Europe has places that can accommodate that, especially if you travel outside of big cities. I'd put more of my budget into a place to stay and slightly less into food, but that's my personal preference, and I've found tons of meals out for a lot less than that. I don't think we spent more than maybe 40 euros for a meal for two anywhere in Spain, including wine/beer, and many were more like 25. Even Berlin and Munich were pretty reasonable and we made up the difference by going to Aldi for some of our breakfast/dinner food.

  • What are some places in Europe with a low price level and worth traveling to?
  • What would you consider a low price level? My mom and I have been to a lot of places that aren't traditionally known as cheap, but we usually stay in places with a kitchen (aparthotels, mainly, we avoid airbnb) and grocery shop so we spend far less on food than a lot of people would. We also travel outside of peak season, primarily to avoid the crowds but it's also less expensive.

  • They won't let you live that Bob's Burgers life!
  • Even outside of the US, it's been pretty common in my experience. Especially in cities that are a lot older where there isn't a lot of space for new builds and they generally went up instead of out.

  • Pressure washer reality
  • Oh I plan on it, but tbh about 50% of the appeal of the UK version is that I've had a crush on Greg Davies for about 100 years and on Alex Horne since the moment I became aware of his existence. I love the show on its own merits but I'm not sure the international versions will hit the same.

  • Pressure washer reality
  • I've been playing so much of that the last few weeks. It requires just enough attention to be distracting but it's still totally stress free. That plus Taskmaster has been my coping mechanism for anxiety.

  • Do you use your blinker in a car?
  • I've used it in to turn into my driveway when there are other cars around because some of my neighbors and most of the delivery drivers drive like total dicks and can't seem to figure out why someone would slow down in a neighborhood.

  • Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from new tariffs
  • I'm pretty sure all the people who deal with imports have to be on the verge of a mental breakdown. What a nightmare. Policy made by a petty, stupid tyrant based on apparently nothing but vibes and changing as often as he shits his diaper is no way to run a country, but here we are.

  • psycho emoji too 🙂
  • I started using Dreaming Spanish which hasn't collected anything but an email and the amount of time I've spent watching videos but I'm not sure if there's an equivalent for Danish. If there is, it seems ok so far.

  • Parents
  • I really am incredibly lucky. She's the type of mom who will adopt people when their own parents are shitty, too, so we could share if you want.

And that's fair - I'm ok with escalators when I'm in closed toed shoes but I do get a little iffy in sandals. My one real phobia is wet paper (like very wet, I don't panic if I spill a little on my desk), so it's way weirder than escalators.

  • What are your last-minute purchases before tariff hell begins?
  • No, I'd be going on a non-lucrative visa. Not off my own earnings because I'm a millennial who was idealistic enough to go into public service, but my mom has enough retirement and assets to swing the fairly modest income requirements for us both and she wants me to come. She's worried I'm going to end up dead in El Salvador, being a member of several targeted groups by this administration.

  • What are your last-minute purchases before tariff hell begins?
  • Just having it in stock seems like a miracle from everything I've seen for a while. I may be moving to Europe late this year or next year and my income will be dropping to about half (with a generally much lower COL, but PC parts look to be about comparable to the US at the moment) so I'm guessing I may be able to find the parts but affording them will be a different matter.

  • What are your last-minute purchases before tariff hell begins?
  • I have a 3080 and usually play on a patient gamer schedule so I don't really need to update yet, but I sort of wish I had now. I feel like my current build is going to have to last me for a lot longer than anticipated. But that's ok, it's probably better for my bank account to hoard the money I have anyway.

  • I sometimes wish I were that dumb
  • Yes, but as someone who is unfortunately related to dozens of Trump supporters, many of them are also dumb. A couple of them are just raging bigots who are happy to buy into the lie, but a lot of them are objectively not very smart. I could tell from a pretty young age, well before politics entered the picture, and my family isn't unique. My cousins married people from similar families and had kids that are also kind of dumb.

There's nothing inherently wrong with being dumb. There are plenty of people who do just fine and are kind, decent humans. But Republicans saw the less intelligent as a target, and that echo chamber is a lot more effective when you don't have critical thinking skills. Fighting against it feels impossible because logic and facts don't really make a dent.

  • Foods that don't have to be refrigerated/heated?

I'm going to a conference next week and while they asked everyone for dietary preferences, I don't have high hopes based on experience (sure, I'd love another "salad" that's just iceberg with no dressing!), so I'm trying to plan ahead and bring some things with me so I don't starve. Unfortunately, the hotel room doesn't have a microwave, just a mini-mini-fridge and I'm bringing my small kettle, so I mostly have to stick to things that can be stored/eaten at room temp, or prepared with just hot water. So far, I have some soy curl jerky to take to long sessions, a couple of ramen bowls, and some bread and packets of almond butter, but I'm kind of out of ideas. There is a Trader Joe's within walking distance, so I can at least grab some fruit or salad when I get a chance, but is there anything else I'm not thinking of that I should pack and/or plan to buy? The conference is a full week, so I'd prefer not to eat crap (like the ramen) the whole time if I can help it.

Now taking suggestions on what to do with soy curls

Finally sprung for the 12lb bag because we love these things. I usually make buffalo soy curls and throw them on a salad or mac and cheese, or make lemon "chicken" orzo with them, but I'm open to other suggestions from anyone else who likes them since I have enough for about the next decade.

I looked up the ones he shows in the video and basically all of them are the equivalent of 30 year old participation trophies. He's posted the video on every city fb post for days, and he calls volunteering slavery every chance he gets. There's a reason his own political party disavowed him a couple of years ago.

This is somehow one of his saner posts

This guy has been running for local office and losing every election cycle for years. His latest thing is that he is a victim the same way George Floyd was because DEI has made it hard to be a white man, I guess?

For the record, his "wife" literally left the country over a decade ago and I think his son has also moved to her country. The last picture he has with them is easily 15 years ago, so I don't think they really give a shit if anyone votes for him. Oh, also, they're Asian so he regularly refers to himself as a "person/father of color."

    How to choose a model?

I don't do much handheld gaming, but I'm going to have some overseas flights and long-ish train rides later this year, and may also be having surgery that will keep me fairly bedbound for about a month. I'm just not sure how much money it's worth spending on a deck that I likely won't use much outside of those specific cases - I bought a switch when I got covid in 2020 and used it a ton at the time but I've only used it a few times since, though I miiight use a deck a bit more just because I already have a pretty extensive steam library.

Is it better to stick to the cheapest model or is there enough of a difference that it might be worth spending a little more for a nicer one?

    Getting wild on NYE

This is one of the first kits I got really excited about and I finally grabbed it on Black Friday. I've never done buttonhole stitch and it's a lot of fun now that I have the hang of it. It's a party at my house, as you can see.

Yeah, definitely don't put any of those profits toward a living wage though. Make your employees trauma dump for the chance at a few extra bucks! Probably comes as an Amazon gift card, too.

    Considering calling this one finished

I don't know how to cross stitch (and did absolutely zero research before starting this kit), but this is a mood, especially after I realized I miscounted and put the s one space off and now have to pull it back out.

    I finally finished these two!

Well...mostly. I need to fill in a couple of gaps on the bear, but I lost my mind and decided to try to finish a whole new pattern by 10/1 so I'll have to worry about that later. I'm overall really happy with how both came out. I can see mistakes up close, but I think from a distance, they're both nice. Also, this was before ironing both, please disregard any wonky satin stitch - the thread moves when I wash off the pattern.
