Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

    This was definitely one of the lazier "we can't use the TARDIS because..." efforts.

  • The first truly great episode of series 2, and unsurprisingly it's a Steven Moffat outing.

    There's a lot of positive stuff to say here - the story structure is twisty without being convoluted, Sophia Myles is pitch-perfect as Reinette, and heck, even Ben Turner's King Louis is pretty good. And of course, the clockwork men that harvest human organs are that combination of cool-yet-terrifying-in-a-childish-sort-of-way that Moffat excels at.

    Tennant is at his swashbuckling best - I've said it before, but I really enjoy him as the romantic hero. And Rose apparently got all jealousy out of her system last episode, so there's none of that hanging over our heads this time around.

    Speaking of Rose, I think they hit a good balance of enthusiasm for the adventure early on in the episode, constrasted with Mickey's nerves. It reinforces my notion that "Tooth and Claw" should have come later in the season, to show an increasing disregard for the seriousness of their situations. As it is, I think that one's still a bit of an outlier.

    It's a little odd that Mickey says he got a spaceship on his "first go," but also references a previous adventure with Cleopatra. Maybe this is his "first go" to the future, rather than the past? I should really check to see if he and Rose changed clothes between episodes, but...nah.

    They didn't bother shoehorning a "Torchwood" reference into this one, which is probably for the best.

  • The environmental portfolio has been the weakest in Kinew's government pretty much since Day 1, and it certainly hasn't improved.

    Right now, I think he's probably correct that such a project has strong support, or at worst apathy amongst Manitobans. That would likely change if the project were to get off the ground, a route was selected, and land appropriations began, but that's all very hypothetical at this stage.

  • Good grief, it's not a "deal" at all - "proposed agreement in principle" indeed. With no definition of "operating costs," it's pretty much a worthless piece of paper.

    There's also some confirmation that the US would have a say in toll reductions, not just increases as was reported last week.

    As an exercise in kicking the can down the road, it's...fine. As an ironclad agreement, it sucks.

  • Regarding the computer program...I do love a scene where you know some high-tech shit is going down because the characters are mashing the keyboards at an incredible speed.

  • Another week, another fairly average episode of Doctor Who...at least, in terms of plot.

    The story shows up, ticks the boxes it needs to tick, and keeps out of the way. The Krillitane plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but does anybody care?

    And then there's the big guest star of the episode - it's Anthony Stewart Head! As a longtime BTVS fan, it was fun to see him, but he's not exactly used to his full potential here. That said, he plays the uptight Krillitane headmaster pretty well.

    Okay, obviously the main event is Sarah Jane showing up (with K9 in tow). Even as a non-fan, I had an awareness of Sarah Jane and her prominence in the show's history, and the show does a good job exploring the conflicted emotions of both her and the Doctor once the reunion happens. I'm sure there are loads of opinions on her pissing match with Rose, but it ends in the only way it really could - with them uniting in mockery of the Doctor. Elisabeth Sladen has a great presence.

    I've never seen The Sarah Jane Adventures, so I don't know whether this was intended to set up that show in a meaningful way - from what little I know of the series, I suspect not.

  • That's not what the article says, but it would certainly make more sense.

    BUT the current standard toll is $8.00 CAD, while the Ambassador Bridge toll seems to be $14.00 CAD.

  • Like I said, it's possible I'm misunderstanding something about the tolls, but that's my interpretation.

    The other piece of the "new deal" that seems to be new is the wording about the Americans having approval about changes to the tolls - Reuters says this means the US can veto any toll hike over 10% of the current value, which...I don't know, it seems like such a hike would be in their best interests to approve should it be proposed, since it would lead to more of the net revenue they seem to care so deeply about.

    I'm also unclear about whether the "regional investment" the new deal refers to is some kind of new money unrelated to tolls. It would be nice to get clarity there.
