  • Early signs of SSD failure or a problematic installation?

  • I created a live USB and ran smartctl and it didn't show any issues. I went ahead and reinstalled fedora (the OS was to far gone to repair) and as for all my files they were backed up on my NAS.

    Although files disappearing along with core systems files does point to a hardware issue of some kind, typically you wouldn't expect a mainstream Linux distro to have a glaring issue like this. So wether it's something stupid like a dirty contact or it's a failing transistor there's only one way to figure out what's going on here and that's to keep using it.

  • Maybe I could hook my bench power supply up to the wires to test it? Although it only goes up to 14.4 volts so if it takes 24vdc I have no way of testing. I could go to the local electronics store and ask for old batteries and get them on the cheap just to test.

  • How do I prepare to go broke?

  • A repair cafe?? Im not from the EU so I'm not familiar with the customs, but is it like a cafe with tools instead of food? Or is it like a community repair shop where people go to work on stuff?

    Edit: I normally would recommend choosing to bike or get rid of a car if OP wasn't about to go broke and cars make for amazing shelter as long as you can maintain them.

  • Learn to do things yourself. Let me give you a few answers

    • Car oil change: $35 for both the oil and oil filter. Would be a little over $75 if I had a shop do it.
    • compare prices when buying food, same with the amount of food in the container compared to the price.
    • spend in cash, easier to follow a budget if you have physical money in your hand.
    • buy things from the second hand market, my laptop that I use was $1100 MSRP, got it for $750. That's a good deal
    • don't eat out at restaurants
    • eliminate monthly services.
    • fix broken things. I fixed my aunts AC window unit for about $10 with a used run capacitor from eBay. Would have costed a little over $300 for a new one.

    There are lots of things I could talk about, and some of these things involve learning a bit, and some time. As someone who was without a job for the entirety of COVID, it forces you to be thrifty.

  • If I had to guess the cellar was probably in use well before the original home owners built on the land. I'm guessing your in the US because your using imperial, you could try looking up land deeds as this might have been a huge farm that got divided up into multiple different properties. Or if your able to get into contact with the former owners maybe they will have a story tell.

    Edit: if your able to find a stamped company name on the bricks or a burned on brand with the wood that could help you narrow it down, also do those nails have a square head or round head?

  • If those were buried about 5 inches below dirt that has to at least be quite a few decades not being used. I would give it a minimum of 60 years as a rough guess.

  • Those stairs look quite old. Could be a food storage area like someone else mentioned. And it makes sense because it's well built and hidden well. Probably to keep passers by and animals out.

    Edit: not a true reactor, but he was able to make some parts for it and supposedly got worried about the the amount radioactive material he had and began dismantling it but got caught with radioactive material.
