Circumcision at NYC hospital almost made baby bleed to death, parents say
  • I’m curious: the person you replied to didn’t say they were comparable, so why did you feel the need bring it up?

In my experience, people who point that out when no one has made the comparison are usually insecure about an issue that affects men getting attention and potentially eclipsing the issue affecting women. Like people who point out that female victims of domestic violence die more often from their assaults during discussions about male victims of domestic violence.

You sure you wanna be that person? Try harder not to be, please.

  • 'God has an order': Head of Trump's faith office says women must 'submit' to men
  • Specifically, many believe her to be perpetuating fraud by demanding money from her followers in exchange for specific acts of prosperity provided by God (and even to ask God to smite your enemies).

Sounds like the Prosperity Gospel to me.

  • Businesses are already trying to pass tariff costs onto customers, Fed report says
  • They're not "trying" to do this, they're doing this because the tariffs increase the prices they have to pay to get their goods, so naturally they need to increase the price they sell said goods to consumers so that they can turn a profit and continue to exist as a business. This is not, was not, and never will be that hard to understand.

  • "I'm makin' money and I don't know the people around here, so fuck 'em!"

This is, sadly, the reasoning at the core of the problem in the heads of the people who know about the problem but choose not to do the right thing. They may rationalize away the cognitive dissonance of knowing they're likely harming others and not wanting to think of themselves as a bad person by making up various excuses, but the truth of the matter is that human beings make decisions more based on emotion than reason, and most people are going to feel stronger feelings about the things that affect them and theirs than things that affect complete strangers. Our psychology—like most other aspects of us—evolved to function in small, tight-knit communities. We are simply not adapted to live in societies as large as we've created.

  • It's Women's Fault
  • I’m sorry, but that’s just not true. Being taught to hide your feelings doesn’t necessarily stunt emotional growth, and even if emotional growth is stunted, that doesn’t necessarily lead to treating other people like objects. You’re making a lot of assumptions about how people mature under these conditions. Do you have any professional sources to back this up or is it just your personal view of the topic?

  • China hits back at US and will raise tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125%
  • As I said, the MAGA cult will worship and rationalize anything Trump does; the independents and swing voters can regret their votes when Trump’s policies come and bite them in the ass. They don’t want that. “It was the other immigrants who were supposed to be deported.” “The tariffs were supposed to be paid by Mexico, not me!

  • It's Women's Fault
  • It’s complicated because there are a variety of contributing factors and it’s not the same for every lonely man. There are some societal mores in certain demographics (e.g. urban Black men, traditional Hispanic men, traditional Southern White men) where men are expected to not talk about emotional pain or express it only in anger. They’re expected to solve all of their own problems and even complaining about a problem you’re struggling to solve makes you look weak to your peers. These kinds of societal forces cut men off from emotional support even when they have friends and makes them feel alone and abandoned even though they have people in their lives.

Then there’s stuff like boys/men getting addicted to video games and not socializing enough in person with people to create friendships groups outside of discord, that kind of thing. Like I said, it’s multifaceted. But it’s no joke and it’s not about misogyny.

  • It's Women's Fault
  • Yeah, that’s not at all what the male loneliness thing is about at all. Was the point of your meme to make fun of how ignorant people are about this particular issue for men or were you trying to suggest the issue is invalid and the result of misogynistic assholes? Because if it’s the latter I think you just demonstrated your own ignorance and should probably spend some time trying to empathize more with men and educate yourself.

  • China hits back at US and will raise tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125%
  • At this point, I'm rooting for this tariff war to keep heating up. Yes, it hurts American and Chinese consumers, which sucks, but the more Americans are hurt by Trump's ridiculous dick-measuring policies, the more of them will recognize the error of their votes. The MAGA crowd is in a cult and will never change their minds, but its the independents that really got Trump elected and they're sway-able. Admittedly fucking stupid to vote for him in the first place, but perhaps sheepish enough to change their votes once they see the wolf's teeth.

  • Tourist helicopter crashes in Hudson River in New York City, all 6 on board killed
  • Like any tool, they’re not dangerous unless improperly maintained or piloted. I can virtually guarantee you, this will come down to either a guilty mechanic (or policies governing mechanic activities) or a guilty pilot. This is not a consequence of “helicopters are fundamentally unsafe vehicles, unfit for tourist consumption.” Laughable.

  • Is there an instance for Democratic Socialists rather than Communists?

I fled Reddit due to the authoritarian mod craziness, but Lemmy.world seems infested with too much Communist craziness. I'm leftist, but communism is idiocy. Is there an instance that leans more democratic socialist but refrains from going off the deep end?

And what is the evidence for it being a Chinese spying platform? Is it owned by a Chinese company? Is there any hard evidence? Why is it so controversial?

If you skip the introduction and don't watch the Q&A afterwards, the presentation is just under an hour. A very good watch, IMO. Interested in what people think.

I just stumbled upon this video and it brought back a lot of childhood memories. The creator's channel features a bunch of other HD remakes of old games too.

Atheists still believe in the supernatural, new report finds (2019 article)
bigthink.com Atheists still believe in the supernatural, new report finds

Just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean you aren't superstitious.

Atheists still believe in the supernatural, new report finds

Posting this because I think it's an interesting examination of the overlap (or lack thereof) between atheists and general skeptics. It's worth remembering that the term 'atheism' only means a rejection of theistic beliefs; non-theistic beliefs that are nonetheless irrational and unsupported by evidence are not relevant to the term. And yet one can easily see why there is an overlap between these two communities and why many atheists scoff at other atheists who profess belief in things like astrology, ghosts, reincarnation, etc.

I'm definitely one of those who doesn't believe in anything supernatural, but I've certainly met atheists who do. It's worth remembering the two groups aren't synonymous.

Evid3nc3 - Why I am No Longer a Christian (playlist)

This is a series of videos I watched years ago in which an ex-Christian explains in detail his journey away from his faith. What I like about this series is that it illustrates how the deconversion process is gradual rather than revelatory and involves a ton of back-and-forth self-questioning, tribulation, anxiety, and even depression. It is not an easy process--something we would all do well to remember while we're posting about how irrational theistic beliefs are.
