People say that a few large instances would be easy pickings for the profit motive, and monetizing.
There is a lot of handwringing over on mastodon about how people should not be directed to the large instances by default. And that people need to join the small instances to make sure mastodon (or fedi-verse) is not taken over by a few who want to profit off it. They mock those on large instances. They tell people they should join small instances.
But I have seen many small instances close and leave people in the lurch. I have seen a few people have to move several times.
I have seen users be abandoned and left with a broken instance that doesn’t work, and the admin nowhere to be seen.
I agree. But maybe the medium ones aren’t too bad.
I am immune-compromised. I have a suppressed immune system, a weak immune system.
If I got covid, it would be bad. Very bad. I would know. As my doctor said - it isn’t easier for me to catch things, but if I do catch them it is much worse.
I have not taken any tests. But then, I haven’t had a fever in three years either.
It’s funny that people think this is cruelty to animals, but they don’t think killing tens of millions of cattle a year for food is cruelty to animals.
Then there is the hundred of millions of pigs killed a year for food.
There is an important difference between “Life” and “things we find in Life” and people enjoy certain things they find in life.
Like music and movies and sex and food. But Life itself? Life itself is a nightmare, and so people use those things they find inside Life to hide from Life itself.
The philosopher Julio Cabrera talks about this difference between “Life itself” and those “things found inside Life.” He points out how it is impossible to enjoy “Life itself” because it is Structural Discomfort. But we use those “things inside of Life” to try to fight against “Life itself”….
Shit. I had not thought about Julio Cabrera’s philosophy in a long time. Now I’m depressed. I go to sleep.
