  • It's on the person explaining the problem to say whether or not they're looking for a solution, or just for someone to vent to.

In a just world, you would be right. Unfortunately, the way that most people communicate this intent is varrying levels of opaque for us, so we have to do what we can with what we have.

You can choose to try and communicate, or you can get mad when you guess wrong because the other person wasn't explicit enough.

I've found that choosing to communicate (massive_bereavement's "what can I do to help?" is a great option.) is usually the best way to handle this situation.

  • You can make anything sound crazy when you put it like that, but yes, this is actually very good advice and comparison.

The rubber duck technique is a completely valid method of working your way through a problem. Sometimes you don't need someone to tell you how to resolve your issue, you just need a chance to talk it through before finding the solution yourself.

Choosing to let your friends/family/loved ones use you as their metaphorical rubber duck as a way of emotionally supporting them is a very common and expected way of communicating with others. A lot of people will do this with the expecation of you just being there to listen to them while they work through whatever their issue is.

Our task is to figure out if they need us to be the rubber duck, the outside perspective, or the man with a plan when they come to us with a problem.

My meme is actually a bit tongue-in-cheek, actually, specifically because of this. Proposing a solution to a problem that someone brings to you is only sometimes the way to continue, and often times it can be disastrous when they just wanted a rubber duck, or sympathetic ear instead.

  • Ludonarrative dissonance can be a hell of a drug. It's not something I've personally been super affected by because I mostly play online content, but it definitely is one of the things I look at when starting a new game.

  • Nah that just does the drum loop for ten hours.

  • I should not have opened it on work time. Youtube has got my number for sure.

  • It's not completely out yet. That was likely AWS being down.

Also, the new quantum protected message encryption headers are about 2kb. If that's causing issues with your internet, you may want to consider looking at new internet.

  • we always use this laptop for our taxes, so TurboTax. Disk-wise

Independent of your experiements with Linux, it may be a good idea to switch away from turbotax. They've been lobbying to make filing taxes harder for the past 20 years.

More relevant to the Linux discussion at hand, they're locked into a specific operating system, whereas the alternatives are much more modern and work just fine in a regular web browser. I've had good success across three states with freetaxusa, personally.

  • Not for me, that was painful to hear.

  • When you do get around to changing the graphics, maybe you can ditch the ovaries and uterus look of the logo.

Lmao I hadn't even noticed, but yes, definitely that.

  • The slate truck has been advertising itself as open source; ironically partially funded by Elon, actually.

There's also been a couple people saying they'd make one for the past several years, if my internet searches are a thing to go by.

This guy just started a company for managing an open source truck project, and he seems pretty serious about it. He just started though, so we aren't likely to see anything actually come of it for several years. https://mutiny.fm/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G-QgQitWNLY

There's also the tabby evo, which is for sale right now, but I'm not so sure I'd call that a car so much as a gokart that may or may not be street legal. https://www.openmotors.co/product/tabbyevo/

  • Nah. Obituaries are usually reserved for immediate family members. You don't get that status until you've commited to marriage.

  • Yeah. Everyone assuming this is some sort of praise or support of the current presidency really don't know how that phrase is normally used. Half the time I heard that phrase it was in a "wtf is going on right now"/"this shit sucks" sort of way.

    Shitty clickbait title is shitty.

  • You kinda have to play the lottery with the HDMI cards; some of the can strip it, some of them can't. And it looks like some of them strip it and get detected.

They can't advertise that as a feature either, so it's a bit of a crapshoot. It may be worth finding the latest reddit post about it to see if anyone has a specific model that was working in the past year.

  • Honestly? Don't do the whole switch, or even a big switch from a few services to another.

Start small. Very small. Try doing just one service you rely on, like your images or music. Immich just announced their first stable release. I use navidrome for my music. Make sure to test these on a copy of your data, not your actual data.

Once you've got one service working as you want it to do, then you can try your hand at another service. This way, you don't get stuck trying to do everything all at once.

It may be worth considering how much (if any) you want to spend at the start, too. That'll inform your next immediate task; setting up basic backups for your data. A spare drive is a good start, but it may be worth keeping another one at your parents house, or similar.

  • For what it's worth, the ID check means this makes it harder to buy ammo than it would be from a store with a person in it.

  • There's also a guy 60km away across lake Ontario that's connecting to my balcony nod

That is really cool. Does it just tell you how far away a connection is from?

  • We wish the security issues were what killed flash, but it had more than twenty years of security issues failing to kill flash. Flash died because it was replaced by newer technology.
