  • I've been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he's causing people to rightfully boycott the US.

Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I'm really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

  • I don't trust a word he says. Musk is a serial liar and there's no evidence he's changed his views. He's never apologized for his previous actions. We must keep boycotting all his companies and never give up until he's penniless and behind bars.

  • Europe @feddit.org

    Abolish Elon Musk

  • Thomas Massie, Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Lee should immediately withdraw from office so we can stop paying those Jim Crow relics their salaries. We should use that money to pay someone who will work for the people instead of total fealty to a dictators like Trump and Putin.

  • If you want change you got to direct your comments to the HDMI forum. Here we can talk about it forever and if they never see anything they won't change. I sent the following email to: admin@hdmiforum.org

    Dear HDMI Forum,

I was recently saw the news that the HDMI forum was blocking open source implementations of the HDMI 2.1 specifications and I want to express that I really believe this is a bad idea. I hope the HDMI Forum will consider allowing it. I can't say I understand what the concern is or the reason for blocking it but I really doubt that whatever issue is envisioned will actually come to fruition, instead I believe that allowing open source implementations will be beneficial for adoption of the standard and since if I understand correctly the licensing fees are based on hardware sold so having open source code will of course not exempt anyone from HDMI licensing rules.

Thank you so much for your consideration,

    (Name)

Maybe it's not perfect (I already wished I worded one sentence better) but I think what matters most is just trying your best and using your voice whenever you can. Be sure to send your email too, the more they receive hopefully the higher the chances that this works but of course be sure to use your own wording, I just put that here for an example.

  • Totally agree with you. Those ideals you mention have been systematically undermined by right-wing/conservative administrations in our government and even some mistakes made by Democrats. It goes back farther than George W. Bush and Trump. Just to name a few:

Richard Nixon - Vetoed the Comprehensive Child Development Act that would have given us what many other countries. Launched the war on drugs and mass incarceration. The Powell Memorandum and Roger Ailes were results of the Nixon administration that really ended up hurting our country far more than I think anyone would have expected. The goal was if another conservative president was corrupt they would not get booted out like Nixon was. Also Roger Stone who was involved in Nixon's campaign was really involved especially in Trump's first campaign.

Ronald Regan - Helped undermine the middle class and start transferring wealth to the rich. There are so many graphs where things start to decline under Ronald Regan. Not to mention he sold weapons to Iran to fund the Contra.

Bill Clinton - Sure he's way better than Bush or Trump but he did pave the way towards media consolidation. We are seeing the effects of this today as the Ellisons buy up media companies for the purposes of turning the companies into right-wing propaganda machines.

  • Right, sometimes the actual articles aren't so bad. Just be sure to always use an ad-blocker whenever you visit those websites so you're not giving them your money or if you have ads enabled take note of who's advertising and contact them and ask them to stop advertising on NY Post or other right-wing rags. For websites using Google Adwords see: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454012 and for Facebook see: https://www.facebook.com/business/help/255483958155378. By the way I found out about this method from Stop Funding Hate. Maybe if you find this interesting you can follow https://bsky.app/profile/stopfundinghate.bsky.social. They are focused on the UK but it's a good model for how to do this kind of thing.

  • Thank you so much for responding with so much understanding.

I can only speak for myself because everyone will likely have different views but for me it's terrifying especially for people who've read history and know that they could one day be repressed if things get even worse. It has a chilling effect and might be part of why you don't see as much resistance as you'd expect.

The cancer analogy is great! Hopefully we can beat the cancer before it beats us, thank you so much for your best wishes!

  • Canada has a similar problem to the US, may not as bad but still tons of Russian propaganda. In fact on Reddit it's really bad according to: https://old.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1hsfxmr/journalists_rachel_gilmore_luke_lebrun_shows_that/. The thread alleges that multiple sub-reddits are under Russian influence. In addition they also have similar propaganda outlets like we have Fox News and Newsmax. For example Canada has "Rebel news" (I put both words in quotes because it's not really news and being a bootlicker for foreign dictators doesn't make you a rebel, it makes you an idiot). This is a must see video about Rebel news. A former employee exposes the propaganda tactics they use: https://bsky.app/profile/peipolitical.bsky.social/post/3lnamb4sva22f

  • It seems you are right on this, I tried to see if other news papers reported on it and didn't find much except some that seem based on the NY Post article. It's actually surprising because usually it seems NY Post is not original reporting, they just add a right wing spin to stories already reported by more reputable news source.

The reason most other papers are not reporting on it is because it's just the opinion of someone who's not an elected official. He has no expertise on antisemtism or any credentials that I could find that make his opinion worthy of being reported (unless you count him being a CEO, I don't think that counts but for a right-wing audience that matters more). What Murdoch papers do is structure their stories in a way that results in people especially those who don't read closely to understand the story in a different way than if you read closely or to react in an emotional way. For example some people will glaze past the fact that it's her brother and think that it was Jessica Tisch who said that. In addition for people who already don't like Mamdani this story will stroke their ego and give them more confirmation bias and help enrich Murdoch a little bit through ad revenue.

By the way: they now have another article titled " NYPD boss Jessica Tisch apologizes to Mamdani after her brother calls him ‘enemy’ of Jewish people " https://archive.ph/vuLlj.

  • Thank you for catching that mistake! I used spell check but clicked the wrong word. It's fixed now.

Good point about all the arbitrary limitations, I really wish they didn't do that either.

Yes, Denmark is a great model for support. I'm speculating because I didn't read this anywhere but I wonder if at some level they understand that a Russian victory is a green light to other dictators to steal land which could make Trump more likely to try invading Canada or Greenland. I will mention I believe one of the reasons Trump made those threats to normalize stealing territory from other countries and to help Putin.

Also on the topic of Denmark and Greenland I can't help but mention how much I'm deeply ashamed and strongly resent the way my country is threatening Greenland and Canada, I'm really really sorry for this and wish there is more that I could do to help stop it.

  • Ukraine @sopuli.xyz

Now's a good time to contact people in your government and demand more support for Ukraine

  • I say we should aim for boycott domination. Time to cancel those streaming subscriptions. Actually though I will say if you must cancel only some of your stream subscriptions I would cancel Paramount and CBS as my first choice to cancel because it's owned David Ellison who is turning the companies he owns into right-wing propaganda machines.

  • People Twitter @sh.itjust.works

    Good Reminder

  • You got to vote and be active in politics and encourage as many people to do likewise. If more people did that the sum of our power would be far greater than the power of billionaires. We can then have reforms like regulating campaign contributions and lobbying and passing more regulations that protect the people.

For some countries there are things working against us. For example in the US billionaires have a lot of power and contribute heavily to politics in part due to the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC which opened the floodgates for unlimited political spending and has really harmed our country. My solution to this is to encourage people to boycott companies that donate heavily to Republicans and most importantly encourage people to vote for people who will help stop all the corruption.

  • Bill Gates was ruthless during the 90s. Just as a random example he tried to make ACPI only work with Windows saying “It seems unfortunate if we do this work and get our partners to do the work and the result is that Linux works great without having to do the work” just as a random example.

Maybe he's making up for it now but still it's more complex than him just always being a good person.

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

The richest people in the world are morally bankrupt

  • I posted it there! Before I was worried to post there because I didn't see any recent posts.

I was just thinking, one way to start adding Oracle might be to create a Database section and mention Oracle's database and perhaps other closed source/bad solutions like Access and suggest open source alternatives like PostgreSQL and MariaDB.

  • PurchaseWithPurpose @lemmy.world

    Boycott Oracle

  • I don't know where this would fit in on the website but one company that is really important to boycott is Oracle. Larry Ellison is a mega right-wing donor and his son is buying up media companies for the purposes of turning them into right-wing propaganda machines.

One way everyone can make a difference is by uninstalling any Oracle software on your computer. You might have the Oracle JRE installed or if you're into virtualization you may be using Virtualbox. It's especially important to avoid Oracle software in a corporate setting because their lawyers may come after you. If you work for a company and you're either involved in purchasing software or a software developer I would strongly recommend avoiding Oracle not just because of ethical reasons but also because typically they have their products are not as good from a technical standpoint as well.

For the Oracle JRE or JDK you can replace it with Adoptium. Adoptium is run by the Eclipse Foundation which is based in the EU.

For Virtualbox you can replace it with QEMU or Xen. For QEMU there are a lot of good GUI or CLI front-ends that make using it easy. See this article: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/QEMU/Front-ends note that some of the front-ends listing in that article also support Xen.

For Oracle's database some say that PostgreSQL is a good competitor. For this one I acknowledge the topic is more complex. I'm just going to leave it at for new designs please consider avoiding Oracle's database if you can. Oracle has a bad reputation among programmers for a reason.

  • You're 100% right about this! I literally made my username BoycottTwitter so that whenever I post it hopefully reminds people that we still have a lot of work to do to get people to leave that nazi-bar "platform".

I've got a few of my friends to leave Twitter and sign up for Bluesky, I hope everyone can consider contacting organizations/entities and people that are still on Twitter and urge them to switch.
