  • green alone isn’t going to support our society

Let’s find out. When I started advocating for increased renewables, the expected limit was the grid destabilizing at 30% renewables. Now many places are there. I recently read a piece expecting the limit to be about 95% renewables based on scalability of todays grid storage. Were a long way from that, so let’s work toward it and see what improvements we can make along the way

Note: one of the more difficult areas to greenify will be the military, but imagine instead shrinking that as we no longer have to defend petrostates or fossil fuel trade routes

  • Imagine the savings to society with the energy independence from green energy

    • shut down most of the continent wide natural gas distribution infrastructure
    • shut down most of the continent wide gasoline distribution infrastructure
    • cut way back on the military when we no longer have to protect oil kingdoms
  • Manhattan is far above any other us city on both walkability and transit. It’s the one place initiatives like this should be obvious and can succeed.

Meanwhile my city is one of the best in the us but far behind so I’m not sure I’d support such initiatives here. I did try a year without a car and it was mostly fine, and can only be much better now. We do have bus lanes for major routes now, fixed a lot of subways infrastructure and are building out bike lanes everywhere, but nothing like nyc. At the time I did feel like I still needed a car and wished there were options for long term storage, but that was before services like Uber/Lyft or short term rentals like ZipCar.

For the very long term, I have a lot of hope for the MBTA communities zoning law passed last year. Boston has long benefited from transit-based development, we have many pre-car towns with walkable centers, but now every town in the greater Boston area has transit-based development too!

  • I hadn’t been to nyc for several years until this past weekend and the difference with e-bikes really struck me. There are so many more bike lanes than there used to be, so many more people on their e-bikes than there used to be, and even some cargo e-bikes like Amazon delivery. Manhattan taking “the right road” to transportation! Keep on going!

Oh yeah, my point. Anywhere an e-bike or cargo bike can go, so can personal mobility for seniors. Now that we have bike lanes, let’s take the next lane for golf carts.

This was definitely my type of trip: grab a Dunks on the way out of the house, hop an Acela down to nyc, watch some hockey, walk around tourist areas, and hop the Acela back!

  • Turkey-Havarti on Amtrak Acela! The bread wasn’t memorable and the sandwich was small, but it tasted good and Acela is a great way to travel

If you grade Amtrak food relative to airline food, it’s outstanding!

  • A motor block is also not a good crumple zone. I’m happy not to have that in front of me.

Battery fires are much less likely than people fear, even in accidents, although obviously horribly bad when they happen. More importantly this is currently popular battery technology, not endemic to EVs. There have been announcements for newer batteries that prevent this

  • Last year I looked for a filter for my washer, and found a lot of inconsistencies and hocus pocus.

This year it’s really hitting me how ratty my cotton t-shirts from pandemic look, especially compared to the rayon blend t-shirts from the same time. If the cotton is heavier and bulkier, doesn’t last as long, needs tons of water…. Is it really better?

  • I’m noticing more and more newer vehicles with insanely bright headlights that are also tightly focussed. Aside from a brief flash over a bump or turn, they are much less blinding. Hopefully this is a problem that will take care of itself over the next decade or two

  • I just replaced the low beams - H-11 - and it made a noticeable difference, but I’m hoping for more. My younger teen especially complains about visibility driving this car and I want him to be safe

Lenses aren’t noticeably hazy but the car is nine years old - 2016 Subaru Forester

  • Kind of puts into perspective civilizations ending from climate change in a century vs in 30 minutes. By the time we would have learned about world ending nuclear war, we’d already have ended. For climate change there’s still hope we will do something

  • Think of that but continuous. Sure there seems to be to be more environmental disasters than ever but each is a one off.

    • Dead lakes and crumbling masonry from acid rain were continuous. For years
    • BP having an oil spill eventually goes away, but rivers were toxic for decades, repeatedly starting on fire
