I think this is going to be a serious problem for scientific advancement over the upcoming decades. Look at how many people are posting stupid ass memes about how the ozone layer hole was a hoax, despite the fact that we moved mountains to fix it.
At this point misinformation travels so rapidly that scientific progress is actually used as positive evidence that the science isn't working--because it works too well and people are too stupid to see what's actually happening.
- It's not an issue that only affects science. It's an issue that affects all professions. People are condition to think if there is no issue if everything is running fine. Everything is running is fine as people are staying on top of various issues. No fires burning out of control is a sign that everything is working fine.
