That's the funniest thing about this, the techbros think people will care to bring them to life in the future.

That's the funniest thing about this, the techbros think people will care to bring them to life in the future.
The Black Mirror writers begin furiously scribbling in their notebooks
Purely theoretical, if you inherit, let's say, Elon Musk's money, and you then resurrect him. Do you have to give that money back?
No, I think you would just inherit Elon Musk too. Make sure you feed him and take him on walks.
Hmmm, a question that affects this is whether a resurrected person be considered the original or a genetically identical twin?
What a load of bullshit. It will be the sims 5.
In 2050?
I think you might be a bit too optimistic.
yeah we gotta get half life 3 and gta 6 first
Not optimistic i just dont think EA is creative enough to make new dlc that long. They have to release 5 so they can put out all the same dlc on the new one.
The teenage girl is probably named AM.
If that girl is anything like me, she would be letting the techbro sims go for a swim, and then removing the ladder.
Great minds think alike!
Guys. You know what I would do in this scenario? It involves swimming pools and no ladders.
wasn't it no bridges?
Too slow, too kind.
A bid for immortality on the back of an LLM is just... asinine. What are they thinking?! That's like saying we can bring Shakespeare back from the dead because we created a very clever digital knot based on all his written works, and he can only speak to us from a web browser or text terminal. Do these animals really think they can just model their Reddit posts and live as a ghost in the machine after that?
I would love to hear what Kurzweil has to say about all this.
Kurzweil seems to have a very positive outlook on ai and the singularity, but completely ignores the glaring fact that its all owned and controlled by psychopath billionaires.
Plus putting shit in your body, that handles everything your braincells already do slightly faster (just faster so you can get squeezed out of your money faster) is definitely great for human development. We will become just a body remotely controlled by a corporation's server. And imagine intelligence being paywalled.
there's likely a mod for giving sim periods. it's likely a matter of messing with some config files to give them permanent endomitosis periods
Wicked whims does adult sims mod stuff, I understand. Dunno about endometriosis, but I'm sure it's doable. N
they better, gonna give them techbros an interesting afterlife
ITT: people supporting torture and violence against tech entrepreneurs because of post-hoc political justifications.
These comments are operating under the hypothetical premise that it is literally a human consciousness. They're essentially describing what they want to do to people if there were no legal consequences. It's very revealing in many ways.
It's like the mentality of a terrorist breeding ground here. Yikes.
Tech bros literally destroying the very planet we live in, causing untold misery... you quiet
A meme about them maybe facing consequences in the far future... you: pearl clutching
sit this one out
The world is burning and millions, billions of people are at risk. All our resources are going into techbro crap with no regard to the environment. And you're worried about billionaires getting bullied.
Yeah sit down.
Downloading your consciousness next have fun being a Minecraft villager.
ps, Modding Elon's consciousness to play with in KSP does sound fun
Idk if legal consequences were any "moral" these people would've been punished for appearing on the epstein list.
It's an impossible premise, and it will remain that way for even the speculatively distant future. People riffing off that is not a sign of the moral failing of lemmy, you need to calm down.
Bro it's just a game relax
What kids like i want my character to be a seditious pedofile narcissist who is trying to dismantle democracy, dismantle the education system, take away women’s rights, destroy my future, build a mass surveillance AI to subjugate all of humanity and ultimately end up hiding in a bunker when humanity either turns on them or they unleash some kind of evil depopulation plan. Fun. I don’t get how they don’t understand that they are the villain
They watched 80s and 90s Saturday morning cartoons and thought the bad guys were actually the good guys with good plans of bringing law and order to a chaotic world and the good guys were the bad guys because they did woke shit like have token female/non-white characters and did things like help people without demanding a 50 year contract and ownership of their children.
What was that Sim Sisyphean home design that was floating around the internet a while back? The guy ha designed a home for the Sim that basically took forever to exit via a circuitous hedgerow or something that the occupant could never quite make it out of to get to work, and would have to turn around and trudge all the way back through the circle to home, only to have almost next to no time to sleep and eat before it was time to get up and begin the hopeless trudge to work again.
Yeah.
Good place for those personalities.
That is too creative. More than they deserve. Just have a simple swimming pool with no ladder... then bring them back to life and repeat.
I want to get off of Mr. Bones' Wild Ride
Sounds like something Let's Game It Out would do. They very often make silly things like that.
Nah, he only made a living, enclosed gallery composed of the entire neighborhood in front of Keanu Reeves' toilet, which happens to be 2 feet away from his kids' bed. Truly breathtaking
Sounds like something GrayStillPlays would do.
Idk, there's the Cracked juggalo experiment to rerun
I would torrent any of them. Then I'd mod them into palworld so they can work to death while my pals chill in the japanese terms.
It doesn't even matter what you do to them. You can torture them forever and you can choose whether they can remember or not.
A better hell of their own making I cannot think of.
Whenever I see this post, I think of this short story. I don’t see it linked here yet, so here ya go.
(Wrong copy linked, updated)
That was a great story, thanks for sharing. I love how the voice of the article sounds exactly like I'd expect from the kind of article we might read today. It reminded me a little of the 1972 "Lenna image" of Lena Forsén in Playboy that was frequently used for illustrating image processing algorithms (a practice that is now banned in most relevant journals.
I also liked how the story mentioned fiction about brain uploading. That was very meta, and I enjoyed it to an unreasonable degree.
Oh! I bet that’s where the name of the thing comes from! If you go back into the link, Lena is at the top of the page, and the original draft shared the name.
Thanks for that added context!
ah sweet man made horrors beyond my understanding
Oh my God that is horrifying. Reminds me of "I have no mouth and I must scream"
This is brilliant. It reminds of those asklemmy questions, "If you could Google one thing from the future", or in this case read one Wikipedia page from the future. Obviously I wouldn't know to find this page, but it reads about a world I, living now, don't understand.
Great story, I thought of this too. What I like about this story is that so much of the horror is implied.
!I agree. I think the technical tone of the story was great for keeping that eerie distance that makes the reader do the work of understanding the horror.
I found the time bit most creepy. When it first mentions about telling him what date it was, I felt unnerved because at that point, I had no way to know how long after the initial upload this piece was written from, in narrative. The sense of disorientation from this made me empathise even harder with MMAcevedo.
I think probably the part I found most horrifying was the bit discussing the kinds of work that MMAcevedo is useful for. I know a lot of people who work in research — enough that I know that academic nerds like Acevedo tend to find menial, repetitive work that doesn't engage their brains to be especially soul destroying. But I suppose that's the benefit of MMAcevedo right? No need to worry about destroying a person's soul if they're not a person, and they (are legally considered to) lack a soul. !<
You should put that in a spoiler tag :)
So, it's Gray Matters with more computers.
Its basically this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32109569-we-are-legion-we-are-bob
There is a lot of it also in a Black Mirror Episode - USS Calllister.
I think it is also the only episode with two parts.
There is also the show "Upload" which is about a digital afterlife once you die.
Well worth a read, especially if you like Andy Weir.
Better than most of Andy Weir's books. Even tho bob is a bit of a Mary Sue.
Very much enjoyed the whole series.
My grandma has a dog named Bob and I can't look at this and not imagine a dog doing these stuff.
If you like this kind of read also check out Fall; Or Dodge in Hell
This is extremely farfetched. Surely in 2050 we're finally using zstd or something else better than gzip.
"Welcome back, Elon. I think you're going to like what we've cooked up for you: Your reconstructed brain has been placed in a medically advanced life-support enclosure to ensure you'll live - or at least exist - forever. We thought about using Neuralink (tm) for this next bit, but the tech sucked. Instead we've implanted your brain with bespoke electrodes hooked up to your grey matter to simultaneously induce inescapable pain and allow your Broca’s area to drive this vocal synthesizer via your motor cortex. We were thinking the dulcet tones of your endless suffering could be made pay-per-view. You won't be alone of course. Look, your old buddy Zukerberg's jar is right over there, between Besos and Altman. Maybe we can make a choir..."
Me trapping Sam Altman in a pool with no ladder
There should be a few billionaires trapped together. After all, leaving them without anything to eat would just be mean.
4 walls. No windows, no doors, no toilet...
I'd be a bit more hands on, forcing him to do certain tasks and when he's about to reach the item, enter buy mode, misplace the thing, unpause.
Mpreg here we go!
I'd put them into a boilerplate game where there is just a green floor and blue sky and 1 skeleton that doesn't do anything but you can hit it.
It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of X has sat immobile inside a golden circuit board. He is the master of no one by the will of The Coders and slave to a million teenagers by the might of file sharing. He is a rotting set of bits writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Techbros. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of The Sims whose soul is tormented a thousand times every day so that He may never truly die.
Wow sims 4 really had a long life.
It's still being supported, but who knows for how much longer after the Saudi/Trump buyout. It's most definitely going to be the last Sims game as EA gets hacked apart and gutted for profit in the coming months.
I read an article recently where EA said there wouldn't be a Sims 5 because expecting people to get rid of all the content they've collected over the years would be mean.
Not sure how much I believe that, but it's weird to think that in a few years/months, people will be reminiscing about today's EA as the good EA
Can we please not accidentally Bobiverse these creeps, this sounds far too similar. Worst possible ending for humanity
Put them in Soma.
If you know, you know.
I almost immediately Ctrl+F "Soma" as soon as I read the title
I had a serious love/hate relationship with that game.
Having the ability to completely clone a person's brain to the point where you can simulate them into environments, consciousness intact, while still not being able to extrude information from them without multiple tries of emotional manipulation is such a cool and horrifying concept
That game just brings laughter and joy to heart
The game camera gives me crazy motion sickness. I can't get past an hour in.
I have watched videos but am sad I can't experience it for myself.
Thanks for the reminder to never, ever do something like this. My consciousness dies with me.
I mean, I would.
Of course, the pool won't have a ladder...
Don't you touch my ladder
"And there, you are all in the pool. Now if I remove..."
This is what 99% of the "cameos" are on Sora. The 1% that aren't Sam Altman doing weird shit are posted by his staff.
I tried to use Sora to make videos of him doing weird shit, and it kept getting stuck behind a content moderation filter. Even prompts like "@sama dancing" would get stuck. I think he doesn't want to be Skibidi Toilet Sam anymore.
Pretty sure Westworld concluded you could fit them all on a thumb drive. And not even a big one
I guess Roko's Basilisk was inside us all along.
Ea-nāṣir has entered the chat...
Come to think of it, the Void doesnt seem so scary at all.
I guess every game needs some villains
But isn't that exactly what's being described here?
It's more than that. People don't even want to hear really great stories from famous people now, especially they're kids. I think it's interesting that think they'll be like Einstein or something. Their egos are incredibly huge.
Their ignorance of, and grasp of history is laughable.
The only kids that are actually better known than their parents are Rameses III, Caesar (you know which one), Jesus Christ, and Bronnie James.
(Please be gentle, I'm just joking around)
People don’t even want to hear really great stories from famous people now, especially they’re kids.
I mean, I've got a stack of podcasts a mile high that suggest otherwise. Histories - old and new - continues to be a passion for many.
They've invented hell.
I'm not sure I like these comments. Under the presumption that an uploaded consioness is even possible that's still a sapient individual I don't really think you can possibly do something to deserve eternal torment like some of these comments seem so gleeful about.
I actually think that this thread is extremely useful for demonstrating that the downside of obtaining immortality by uploading your consciousness is that you risk handing your digital soul into the hands of a wrathful and malicious deity for all eternity.
(Though honestly, I think that uploading is overrated anyway given that I will still be dead, so how does the continued existence of a copy of me help anything?)
They are being inserted into a 2014 video game. I think it is safe to assume it is just their likeness that is used in the game in this scenario. It's not like the video game is capable of doing anything with the consciousness data of the files.
Why a future child is playing (what I understand to be) the worst game in the series is the strangest part of this story.
Yes these comments are implying that thier "likeness" is being tuned into a slave/forced to endure endless pain.
The post inserts them into a 2014 video game, but some comments here go quite a bit further.
I share your consternation, but I also find it cathartic to imagine testing how long it would take the simulated consciousness of Elon Musk to develop a sense of compassion for workers when forced to work in a Tesla factory (and indeed, if that would ever happen). I imagine I'd be far less comfortable thinking this way if it wasn't a concept squarely in the domain of science fiction. I think many of the most gleeful commenters are people who are presuming that simulating a consciousness in this way isn't possible.
Some of them are dark, but you can't do this anyway. The men they're talking about need to think about their future a little bit and come back down to earth. Admittedly, I like the teenage girl playing sims with their character the most.
Do bear in mind that we’re talking about a select few persons that didn’t hesitate at all to do far, far worse to thousands of human beings.
Just google "usaid cuts impact", which was deliberately caused by these tech bros without a shred of remorse.
And the scenario in this post is a fictional one, unlike the untold destruction caused by these cruel cuts.
I don't like tech bros. If I could snap my fingers tomorrow and kill all billionaires I would do it. Its just bad to want to watch someone suffer and wanting them to suffer forever is inherently immoral. No human can do so much bad that they deserve eternal torment because humans can only live for a finite period of time and create a finite amount of harm.
Consciousness is a process, not just data. If they copy the weights of your brain neurons, they would be able to create new life that thinks like you, but is NOT you. Although that new life would be very confused and would honestly believe that it is you.
Thus, it's neither eternal life nor eternal torment. Maybe torment of newly created AIs, but we didn't come to "AI have rights" yet.
I don't really think you can possibly do something to deserve eternal torment like some of these comments seem so gleeful about.
It wouldn't be eternal. Most kids don't have that kind of attention span.
Plus, these consciousnesses might be carefully protected the way major corporations have protected my SSN. So maybe the billionaires have nothing to worry about...
Read the other comments their are multiple people bringing up eternal simulated torture. I never said anything about the post itself I specifically called out the comments being weird.
and then you build a pool for them to play in without a ladder
I'd just download it and delete it 👌
