I replaced the toilet seal on our upstairs toilet after noticing a small leak coming from the basement ceiling today.

It was my first time doing it and it went well thanks to some help from my neighbour.

DIY wins are the best. Even more so when it saves you from a bigger headache down the road.
Just wait until your upstairs toilet has a loose toilet flange. That's a new fun kind of repair to make.
Right on! As a dull plumber I'm proud of you. I hope you used a wax ring. Tried and true. the garbage foam gaskets should be illegal
- Well, I disagree. I think there's a way to install a toilet using a gasket or foam such that it works as good as with wax. But I think the two things are not fully compatible. Like you gotta plan out the correct offset. I like the silicone seals. I've installed them in 3 different houses as I've moved a few times in the past years. They never fail and the removal is clean.
- I used wax. Was slightly more work but I know it wont degrade.

I had to do that a while back, though fortunately it was because I was installing new flooring in the bathroom which needed to go under the toilet, rather than because of a leak. At least the seals are inexpensive.
Wait, so the toilet upstairs was leaking, and you noticed that in the ceiling of the cellar? Sounds like water made quite the journey to get there. If so, there could be some serious moisture damage. Drying up those structures is really expensive, but having asthma and allergies is even worse.
- I have a bungalo. Upstairs means ground level. Sorry. Subfloor was all good. Small leak and not for long.
